It’s been an ongoing issue for the last couple of years. We went in July/August this year to the riviera maya and found it variable. The workers at our hotel were out every morning clearing it and they also had huge nets across the lagoon to try and stop it coming in- I think all the larger hotels have similar set ups. I think there was only 1 day were it effected us and that was mainly due to the smell. They kept on top of it nicely and most days we didn’t have any. It was worse at that time in Cancun but of course it changes with the tide. I believe Cancun and riviera maya have also set up nets in the main resort centres too.
We could actually see the huge islands of seaweed out at sea from the airplane as we were flying in which made me a bit worried about how it might be but of course it does break up a bit on the way in.

Hi, we were in riviera maya in aug and it was pretty bad while we were there. Fortunately the hotel pools were so nice it didn't spoil it for us. We had a trip to swim with turtles in Tulum and that beach was much better but not completely clear. A few weeks after we got back the beaches were perfectly clear. It comes and goes and you cannot predict it unfortunately. The hotels try hard to keep on top but they are fighting a losing battle when its there
