Emergency Alert tests on android phones tomorrow

DD messaged me a link that showed the government are doing tests on android phones for a new alert system they hope to launch in the summer.

2 tests planned, one tomorrow and the other 29th June. So if your phone or tablet starts bleeping and buzzing, now you know 😄

Once launched, they will warn of danger to life nearby. Good idea I suppose, as long as it works properly and doesn’t go off randomly !

Edit - maybe this is widely known , the news hadn’t reached the back of beyond though so was new to me 😄

Mi IPhones have been doing his for years when visiting both USA and UAE. Not sure why they are needing additional testing when other counties already have implemented it.. Its an odd experience to be in a bar or restaurant and here all the phones wailing (which they do even if switched on silent) to say CHild missing in X, or land slip closed. Y road etc

I’ve not experienced that yet ! Would be strange when everyone’s phone goes at the same time.

Android phones do this too. It's a good idea I think but as you say its only new to the UK.

Yeah I remember receiving an AMBER alert last time we were away. The kid was fine!

Oh wow ! That’s good then, so no excuse for not knowing what was happening. I’m bad for having my phone on silent when I’m away and just check it a few times a day so I’m not bothered all day long 😄

When we were in Florida our phones alerted us that a particular area needed to evacuate due to a wild fire, we were at a house we had hired through Airbnb and had no idea if we were in the area that needed to evacuate or not, was quite disconcerting, thankfully the neighbours were in and knew what was going on, we were about 5 miles away from the evacuation zone!

Can absolutely see how this could save lives, does rely on government acting responsibly though!
