Unless terribly ill, so far, so good [touch wood] I wouldn't budge during heavy turbulence and, thanks to advice from a friend who flies weekly on business, when seated always keep my belt fastened. He was on a JAL flight in heavy turbulence when the aircraft suddenly dropped like a stone, all unbelted pax flew up out of their seats slamming their heads on the overhead bins which resulted in severe head trauma for many and a broken neck for one. Clunk click each trip!

About 10 years ago I was flying to the UK from Boston.

The flight took of fine and the captain did say we may encounter some turbulace.

In fact the cabin crew were never allowed out of their seats for six hours. The plane was flung around and even with a seat belt on you had to cling onto the armrest to stay in your seat.

No one could go to the toilet, if you had undone your seat belt you would have hit the roof.

We watched from behind the wing as they flexed upward and downward and at one point the captain came on and reassured people the plane was designed to take this type of a beating!

When we diinbarked the captain came out and shook hands with every single passenger.

I have not had a flight like it since nor do I wish to, my niece who is cabin crew for BA has never had one where they couldn’t get up either but they do exist.

Hey up 3disneybairns (3? Sucker for punishment eh hin ) For me, munmun's story (thank you munmun) proves what we're told time and again, that these big metal tubes are built to cope with very heavy turbulence. Whilst we've been in mild/bit of heavy turbulence I've continued reading my Nook or watching the movie because I'm reassurred that pax are safe. I do get a slight chuckle when it can be a tad dodgy and an involuntary 'ehh' slips out I always think of that saying, if crew are unconcerned, then so should we be.

Whilst on a flight to Sanford we noted the two rows in front were calling to each other for ket all the time, must've eaten a ton of sweets, crisps etc. On the home stretch into Sanford we hit a canny bit of turbulence - all we heard was the bell calls whilst the two rows in front of us proceeded to hurl all that ket back up - lovely!

On our way back from Greece in a TUI plane a woman was moaning and fussing about not having all her party together. The 1st flight attendant established that she hadn't pre booked seats in advance. She explained that the two people in front would have paid extra for their extra leg room seats. The lady was huffing and puffing and collared a 2nd attendant to complain. The senior attendant came to see her. He asked her to explain and she said her son had been separated from her and it was unacceptable. He asked how old her son was. She said he was 19. I could see the flight attendant trying to stifle a giggle. I couldn't stifle my giggle though.

Yes, I did a double take.

Flying back from Miami to London with BA, early 90s, with my girlfriend , took off, I promptly feel asleep, awoke to loud screaming, apparently we lost power in all 4 engines and was plummeting to the sea, we descended 20000 feet very quickly, captain managed to get 2 engines restarted, and we returned to New York. Was put up in a hotel and returned home the next day, as an aside all the 1st class passengers got to fly home on Concorde.

Do you mean no turbulence or just extreme turbulence?

I don’t think I’ve ever been on a flight in 40 years of flying, where the seatbelt didn’t have to go on at all for turbulence.
