So let me get this right! they always give you two keys but they are on the same key ring and cannot be separated without cutting the ring?

I presume having done this and one gets lost you will still get hit with the big replacement fee?

oh and good luck to the original poster with finding the key

Yes, both keys are on a thick wire band and can't be separated...stupid idea really.

Hope you find them soon.

Hi
We have just come back. We went to Clearwater for 2 days and 'lost' the key (we only had one from Alamo). I rang Alamo at 6.00 am, they are open 24 hours, they were going to come and tow the car to Tampa Airport and my son was going to drive a car back. he cost for this Was 208 dollars. I said I didn't know if the key had some how got locked in the car, they said this was 57 dollars for a break in. They said they would send a tow truck but attempt a break in first and it would take 90 mins.

Ten minutes before they came my son found the key in his shorts . When he went down to meet the tow guys to tell them, they said they would have just broken in they didn't have a spare key. This was a 2015 Tahoe fantastic car. We don't know if they have charged us yet.

Question:
Would holiday insurance not cover loss of keys?

All cars come new with two sets of keys. The rental companies tend to keep them together, as there is no guarantee that the car will always be in the same area of the country, so having keys follow the car s around would not be practical.
When you trade in your car, normally the dealer asks for the two keys with the car as without that the car may be insecure.
Mind you when I collect a hire car, it's amazing how the wire that holds the keys tends to fall apart on the first day.. Of course there is always my Lestherman Multitool in my case whenever I travel.

I also think its ridiculous about the keys being tied together!

There should be an alamo head office somewhere who stores a spare key for all cars and can have the re cut centrally and mailed out to the office of whatever state the car ends up in

I hope you find it!

The "re-cutting" of the key isn't an issue. Each key has a transponder in it that needs to be linked to the car - you cannot start the car without it (just a duplicate of the actual "key bit" won't help you). So you need a new key (cut), plus access to the car and re-program the car to accept the new key.

You would pay an awful lot more in the UK to tow your car to a garage and get a new key! Not sure how much they will charge you just for a lost key (i.e. if you lose 1 out of 2)...

The car I had in August only had one key on it. I thought Alamo must keep the other just in case.
I always check and re check my pockets when I've locked the car escpecially at water parks before getting in the water😳

Afternoon all helpers

Still not found but OH is currently waiting at 'Lost and found' to come off their lunch break to check.

They only have us one set of keys 😐 so we used the Disney buses today which was lovely but unfortunately we didn't make it for rope drop. 18 months of planning thinking we would do this on our first day.

Oh well can't change it now, gutted about the $208 dollars.

It's only an economy car, will that make it cheaper 😄 x
