But I return a large saloon 3 times a year. I really cannot be bothered to fill it up, or worse still, forget to for the sake of a few $.
Over a year it probably costs me $25 maybe? Peanuts compared to my vacation cost.

But we all decide what is best for us.
I'm with you Mr TM, I always prepay with Dollar as I really cant be bothered filling up on the way back to the airport. Maybe costs me an extra $10 as I probbaly leave a bit in the tank. Its not cost me anything like $90 though for an intermediate SUV.

Everyone is assuming it's a fuelling charge, but it may have been something like an overstayed parking charge, not stopping completely at a Stop sign etc etc.

Ask Alamo what the charge is for. I just last week got my prepay fuel charge and the Tolls and Admin charges. $44 all in, this was on a car returned on 22nd May, so about a month to get on my statement. I've now got another five weeks to pay it.
That was with a Chevy Impalla LTZ so $ 30 ish seems fine for a full tank for me. I filled it up from 1/4 tank and it cost just over $26 so I'm happy with the prepay.

Ignore the bit about asking Alamo...I just re-read your post and saw you have done that...oops.

We returned on Saturday and I have just checked my credit card statement online and I have been charged $90.96 and I don't know what for. When I picked up the car my paper work said no extra charges I returned the car full and there was no damage to the car so I have emailed Alamo and are waiting for a reply  I will keep you informed of the outcome.
You won't be charged for damage unless it's a windscreen or underbody, and also there's no excess on car hire insurance in Florida.

I would hazard a guess its fuel and enhanced roadside assistance.

I think it might be for fuel but it is not for road side assistance because on my pickup papers there is nil for roadside assistance

Hang on a minute, how the heck did you get over the border for the Toon, if you'd kindly supply all registration numbers I'll have a word with me gadgey mates at Aykley Heads Police HQ so you're turned back if you dare to venture this way again Please stay oot pet, we're a right super swanky classy lot up he-ya ya kna!

Re the full/empty tank situation, I agree it's a personal choice, we opt return full as driving up from SW Fla I wouldn't dare run it in on fumes with the petrol light glaring, my backside would be chomping on the seat (telt ya, dead classy like) In May I was pleasantly surprised what a frugal lad the Fusion was, picked up full, drove to friends in Clermont, filled the lad up at the 192 WaWa just afore we joined the I4 for the airport, I reckon I'd driven about 185 at that point. It cost $11 to top him off, well chuffed with that.

Mmmm. Heck of a lot for fuel. Did you go through the tolls early on in the holiday?

Mind you a tad early for tolls to hit your card yet.

Anything for UMP?

Rhino - I do apologise as I can't remember my full circumstances. Did Alamo per chance send you an email with a link to click so you can view the charge(s)?

In, I think, 2013 Dollar placed a toll charge in my cc account. They sent an email to a link I could see the charge. The car was parked at Pine Island pool at the supposed toll violation time, 160 miles away from Orlando! I made a phone call and the agent actually admitted he thought I'd be back in the UK (aye, bet you did bonny lad). I insisted on photographic evidence, which you are entitled to, and stated I had a Winn Dixie receipt proving I was on the island at the time. Fast frward 4 weeks and guess what, Sunpass couldn't supply photographic evidence, well, colour me happy, imagine that. They refunded the charge as a 'gesture of goodwill'... do me a favour, they damn well knew they had no proof. Admin error, yeah, right! I've seen way, way too many 'admin errors' that involve a charge with car suppliers and don't trust them one iota, hence why I watch them like a hawk and keep every scrap of paper for 3+ months.
