I did it for one year only. When they were younger they asked a few times and I refused as I knew I'd end up hating it and didn't want the stress. Last year - when they were 11 & 13 I did it. The elf arrived with advent calendars and a note saying 'for one season only' and then we did it. It was fun but I'd organised everything in advance and had it all sorted so literally had to arrange it once they were in bed every night. I don't know how anyone does it in Dec while still trying to think of ideas. I also adapted other people's ideas into ones I'd happily do. I wasn't wrapping my living up (for example) but I did Xmas paper the kids doors one night so they had to smash their way out. It was nice for that year but it made me doubly glad that I'd stuck to my guns about not having it as a regular thing!

One year my daughter wrapped one of his legs in cotton wool cast with a note that he’d broken his leg skiing there so couldn’t be moved for 10 days ⛷⛷, that gave some rest moving him about. When Covid first struck he was confined in a glass box isolated a few days. 🥳🥳😂

My two eldest daughters have a child each so I bought both an elf.
One daughter and her husband are really creative and do something every night, my other daughter does something Dec 1st then tells her daughter elf has had to go back and help Santa make toys and won't be back until December 23rd
