I honestly hadnt realised how controvertial this thread would be!
I had tried to make a low sugar dessert for my mum who is trying to cut out sugar, I know that she loves sugar free jelly so went with basing a dessert on that! I know that the fruit has sugar in it, but she is OK with sugar in fruit (!) - I had tried to make a low sugar custard but this did not set at all well, and did not thicken so the whole thing was a disaster and she just had some jelly/fruit and cream.

I was brought up with the old box of Birds dessert trifle mix, so hadnt realised that clearly this was meant for the commoners! DH loves trifle but I will continue just to buy his as it did seem a lot of faff for a pudding! and he loves the ones with jelly in!

Any tips on ratio of custard powder, milk and sugar for a good set custard, most welcome! X

I add that I very over the age of 30.. sigh... and never had birds trifle... my mum always made it, but we had strawberry blancmange instead of custard.. always had Swiss roll, fruit and jelly.. yum.

We now cheat.. and buy a 1 litre Birds Custard Carton 😀
It is a little sloppy, but we can live with it!

I use Delia’s custard recipe with double cream and an extra teaspoon of cornflour.

I think Mrs Bird had an egg and dairy allergy so it has absolutely nothing to do with Custard.

I cant eat trifle, it brings back too many bad memory's. A few years back i was going through a rather messy divorce and I invited my then wife over to discuss separation agreements. I thought I would make a really nice meal to try to get on he good side and made a trifle as it was her favourite. Anyway it was all going really well until the end, i bought the pudding out and the attention moved towards access rights to the kids and who they would go and live with. It all got rather heated and in the crescendo of the argument she picked up the trifle and threw it over my head... ... ... ... ... anyway... ... in the end I got custardy!

Well I must be as common as they come because I love a Birds trifle. My trifle dish was my grandmothers and is over 100 years old now but it’s quite big so I have to use two boxes.
I’ve tried doing a posh trifle before but it just ended up like jelly soup.
