You deserve more than a doorstep clap.
Hopefully there will be lots of treats and pleasant patients on the day

I finish on the 22nd and not back at work until the 10th January.
23rd will be food prep day, we have a family tradition that we go to the cinema on Christmas Eve, this year it’s the new Charlie and the chocolate factory movie. I’m doing dinner for ten on Christmas Day, then Boxing Day is my chill day with movies cheese and wine. We are having friends over on Saturday 30th (there’s a big football match on that day) for food and drinks. Then we go to Tenerife on New Year’s Day, flight is at 5:45am so we need to be up around 2:30am so early bed on Hogmanay for us.

I have booked the three days off in the middle. So I finish on the 22nd and I’m back on the 2nd of January.
I used to work in customer service and only ever had Christmas Day off up until 2020 so I’m excited! This is the first time I’ve had this long off since 2014. Christmas Eve will be my mum, my brother, my husband and me and we will have a Chinese. Christmas Day is my mum, brother, husband and his side of the family. Boxing Day is a pjs and games day with my mum and the in laws. I’m not sure how long my mum is staying for, she might stay until I go back to work after New Year. |

DD is hosting Christmas lunch for 12 ( us her parents ,her soon to be husband and his close by family) We do Christmas dinner as one family so we each see our children which is lovely. On paper sounds this sounds like it's a feet up TV on type of break. However... she's a teacher breaking up on the 23rd, he's in the military so maybe not home. Which leaves her future MIL & his future MIL doing the heavy lifting. Apparently hosting involves greeting guests & pouring drinks .
My DH works offshore & should be home, I'm no longer nursing so it's going to be both of us home doing as little as possible ,eating cheese & crackers. I used to enjoy working Christmas day we made the best of it for our patients, treats, movies, Santa. Working New Year was awful, drunk visitors, patients & aggression. Good Luck to all working this year.xxx Edited at 11:36 AM. |

Both retired here, this will be my 3rd post retirement, so grateful to be free to do what we want over Christmas…….so out for a meal on the 16th with 3 of the 4 children and families, then maybe breakfast at Chatsworth farm shop on Christmas Eve, probably getting a few last minute goodies…….then a chilled Christmas Eve/day and Boxing Day with visits to the kids and grandchildren between Christmas and the new year…..and the bliss of never having to work again…..

Do you know how it works if you normally work a set 3 days of 12 hour shifts Mon, Tues, Weds on a hospital ward? Does the normal schedule just get ignored so everyone gets one of the main days off?

It depends on your individual team/managers
With my team we ignore the fixed days but then this year if someone said my fixed days are wed/thur/fri so I’m off all of Christmas then when Christmas fell on throes days you’d be expected to work, you can’t have it both ways, either you do a bit each year or some years you do lots but then some years you’d do none, hope that makes sense. |
