Can England win Euros under Southgate

Personally, and I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t see it.

He’s tactically poor at the highest level. He has the greatest collection of attacking talent seen by any country for years but has no clue how to get the best out of them.

His supporters will point at recent tournament success, but it’s simply been luck of the draw.

In each of the tournaments Southgate has been in charge we’ve beaten the teams we’re supposed to beat and then lost to the one we weren’t. Under Southgate England haven’t beaten any team above them in the rankings

Don’t get me wrong, Southgate has bought the England team together and made players want to play for their country (unless you’re Ben White). But he’s taken us as far as he can, and should have gone after the World Cup exit to France

Sadly I think you’re right and it’s a crying shame - the talent we’ve got, we really should win after all of these years and finally getting the type of players that are more than capable of being, and beating the very best, but I’m not at all confident they will even get past the quarters, but they certainly should.

No, with the exception of a couple of players ( such as Foden) English players aren't technically good enough.

Doubt it. But I doubt they would under any manager unless they drop the favorite few and actually start playing those in form.

foden, bellingham, kane , saka... 1st four off my head all "technically" some of the best players in Europe

wether the team the player in is cohesive is another matter

Could they win? Yes. Will they win? Despite the bookies odds they're not the favourites.

I'm an England fan and go to the games. I think Southgate has done a great job in turning around the team and the attitudes to the team but he needs to, and probably will, step down after the Euros.

He has a great array of attacking talent but is hampered by a lack of defensive talent, which is only made worse by the the fact we have so many injuries in this area. This seems to be why he falls back on his double pivot ahead of them and why players like Henderson keep getting games.

Pickford is still probably or best keeper but he doesn't really rank in a list of goalkeeping greats. If we go with a back 4 Walker is a shoo-in at right back, Stones will get one of the center back spots despite barely playing for City recently but who's alongside him? Maguire had been injured and been pretty consistent for England despite his ups and downs for United. Guehi? Been injured for a long time and only just coming back. Gomez? A bit of a jack of all trades defensively and will probably make the squad because of it. Tomori? Had a poor season in Italy. I'd probably go for Branthwaite currently.

But left back is a disaster with all the main contenders injured or coming back from injury, and one of those - Trippier - is really a right back.

It's the back that's likely to cost us. Ahead of them in Bellingham, Kane, Foden and Saka we have world class players and Rice is a quality defensive midfielder.

I'll still be there with my fingers crossed.

As a Scot this has nothing to do with me, but i struggle to understand the abuse that Southgate gets. I think i’m right in saying that he’s taken you to the semis, then the final, then the quarters of the last 3 tournaments and it’s hardly his fault that 3 of your better players bottled the penalty shoot out v Italy.

It’s also fairly difficult to beat the sides ranked above you when you’re ranked 3 or 4 in the world, especially seeing as you only play some of those sides competitively every 4 years or so.

As for whether you can win it, course you can, you’d have won it last time if certain folks had the cojones. He needs to build a team around Foden and Bellingham for me, with your defensive issues attack has to be the best form of defence. Maybe that’s not Southgate’s thing though so if he doesn’t do that then I can see an argument for replacing him but that brings your next issue - who should that be? I imagine that folks like Lampard and Gerrard, maybe even Rooney would be linked with it. Better than Southgate though? Not for me.

As i said though, hee haw to do with me

I would put Foden and Bellingham up there and maybe Saka one day. Kane a great goalscorer... but Foden is a classic example of your last point as he's half the player with England than he is with City... England needs more than a few technically gifted players to win a trophy
