Football takes up an obscene amount of money anyway, overpaid blokes kicking a ball around. Would be a nicer gesture if they all donated half of their fees for having the privilege to pay for their country into a central fund to help sport in schools. But they all too greedy for that!

As for a bank holiday - how would everybody arrange suddenly for childcare when schools and nurseries are closed, who would be arranging all the extra medical sessions and clinics at short notice, no shops open - the carnage of Christmas Day closing for one day is bad enough.

The England team do to this,

It is understood that England players earn around £2,000 per game - but since 2007, they have been donating that money to the England Football Foundation, which then distributes it to charities, raising more than £5 million in the last 17 years.

There is an awful lot of charity that goes on behind the scenes, it's just you don't get to know about it unless you do your research.

Brilliant idea
Gets my vote
I don’t support a football team but would support this if it happened

Most football clubs have charitable arms which players support, including hospital visits to sick children. Marcus Rashford has certainly used his own money and profile to support hungry children and change government policy. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most generous football players yet the majority of this is deliberately not reported.
I think, as in all walks of life, there are footballers who are extremely generous and those who are tighter than a badger's 🦡

The premier league alone contributes £4.2B a year in tax to the U.K so I would imagine quite a lot of this is spent on schools.

In addition to this most Premier League clubs run fantastic community schemes some even run the sports departments for schools. Several football clubs use their kitchens to generate food in the week for people who need it in the community.

Yes footballers get paid a lot of money they have unique skills but most clubs put a huge amount back into the local community not to mention local and national economy.

I felt exactly the same this week when I found all the late afternoon quiz shows sacrificed for Horse Racing and Wimbledon.
I will never see a Horse Race and I most certainly have not ever grasped a Tennis Club.

The fact that Claire Balding was on the screen merely compounded my dissatisfaction.
