Love a bit of Arctic Roll - and I recently bought one from. Brings back childhood memories!

Fruit and carnation milk at my paternal Grandmas. She was very straight laced and tight. The house was freezing and she never put the lights on. We had tea about 5pm, it was salad and pudd. The church bells nearby started to ring about this time, it was really miserable. The pudd. was served in dishes with a picture of plums on the bottom, I knew when I could see the plums that it was only 30 mins until going home time.

We had carnation milk fruit jelly fluff.

a jelly pack - with all the squares- made up with a bit of boiling water, a bit of cold water , left to cool then a tin of carnation milk whisked up til triple the volume, then mix the jelly into it. Was fluffy and wobbly.

It was mostly tinned fruit and carnation for us and I hated Carnation so just the fruit. Occasionally it was a tin of fruit cocktail and we’d argue over who got the cherry! Trifles were for special occasions, Christmas and adult birthdays. Ice cream or arctic roll when it was the kids birthdays, we didn’t have a freezer so it was bought from the local shop on the day.
Finally, when we had a freezer( I was well into my teens) then we had Arctic roll more often and Viennetta became the birthday treat.
