Insurance for DIY Holiday

Can anyone recommend what sort of travel insurance I need when booking my holiday separately? I've only ever booked a package holiday before and therefore taken out just basic holiday insurance from somewhere like Tesco/Boots.

I impulsively bought flights for next September/October with Thomas Cook this week as they were really good price for PE but have now realised that they aren't ATOL protected and so am panicking a bit!

I would be grateful for any advice - thanks.

For our travel insurance we usually use Virgin as it seems to cover what we need for our DIY trips.

We always make sure we have Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance (SAFI) and End Supplier Failure on our policies.

Also we purchase our flights and tickets etc on a credit card to offer section 75 protection.

Hope this helps

Jumping on here but do I need travel insurance for when I book (am guessing you do) or is it just for when we travel to cover us?

Get travel insurance when you book although the dates that you request to be covered for are your travel dates - unless you plan more than 1 holiday in which case get an annual policy as will work out cheaper. The exception under your policy will be the cancellation section as it automatically starts the day you take out the policy and ends when you depart. Hence people on here being urged to get insurance as soon as they book a holiday.

Brilliant thanks, currently don’t have any (not going anywhere) but want to book in July for next June so thinking an annual policy will cover both

Thanks all. I have looked at Virgin but unfortunately that can only be booked a year out so now just need to look for other companies that include the things you mentioned.

It's completely my fault for not checking but I just assumed TC Airlines would be ATOL protected! Lets just hope the talk of them being in trouble doesn't come to anything and I was panicking for no reason!

Thanks for asking this. DH & I have the Nationwide Flex Plus insurance and then DD the same via her account.

Will look into if we are covered specifically the Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance (SAFI) and End Supplier Failure points. Never thought about the 12months rule either and our last WDW/US/IOA trip and we had it booked 15months ahead

xxx

Not sure what you mean by "cover both" if only having 1 holiday? If you book in July to go June 2020then you can buy a policy in July and ask that it be operative for the dates in June 2020. But the cancellation section of that policy will actually be operative from July this year until the date you travel should something arise that means you can't go.

Yeh that’s what I mean if I take out insurance in July before booking will cover the booking and the actual trip
