For the first time in forever...Or Not?-Pre Travel Day

PRE-TRAVEL DAY

This trip was along time coming and had been hit and miss all the way up until the end.

My grandma, who I am very close to, had a heart attack 2 weeks before we were due to travel. We weren’t sure if we should go on the trip. When we went to see her in hospital though, she was the picture of health. She was loving it in hospital and was a having a good old laugh with the staff and other patients. I asked her about the cancelling the trip and she told me not to be so stupid. Lol! That’s just the kind of person she is.

We then found out my dad was coming over from the States (He lives in Florida). He wasn’t sure what date and it all kept going back and forth until the week of the flight he said he was flying in on Thursday morning. We were flying out on the Saturday but airport hotel on Friday. I told him we would see him on the Thursday night and also when we got back.

All of us had needed new passports. Well, I don’t very often struggle with paperwork, especially related to holidays, but I almost had a nervous breakdown with sorting these passports out. From terrible photos to missing birth certificates to mistakes on the forms to still not having them on the week we were flying, it was a nightmare. They finally arrived on the Thursday. We were flying on the Saturday but driving to Manchester after school on the Friday! Talk about the last minute. Haha!

So on Thursday, after the class that I teach on Thursday nights we all went round to my grandma's to see my dad. He was fine and my grandma was doing well too. It was lovely to see him and I was a bit sad I wasn't going to see him much because we were away.

Even on the Friday, I was still convinced we wouldn’t be going but carried on regardless.

Today was mainly spent packing as I am a very last minute packer. I had bought packing cubes but also had ziplock bags. I like to pack a full outfit in a ziplock bag, including socks, underwear and any hair accessories etc. That way when I reach into the case I can just pull an outfit out for each person without any hassle. I packed a few toys and colouring/drawing items for the flight. I seemed to be preparing for a Florida flight and not the short one to Paris haha!

I didn’t really understand the packing cubes and only used a couple of them for Cyrus’s toys and Seren’s colouring pens. Maybe I just wasn’t doing it right.

Seren and I got ready and waited for Norm to come home with the boys after school. We dropped our dog, Shadow, off at Norm’s mum’s and stayed there for a while to avoid rush hour traffic. Shadow was happy playing with his brother and we went on our way.

The kids all chilled out in the back with the phones and we set off. We stopped for a Burger King (for the rest of us) and a McDonald’s a bit later for Seren as she doesn’t eat Burger King. After a while Cyrus and Phoenix both fell asleep. Phoenix can’t stay awake for longer than 20 minutes in a car but he usually still sleeps well at night as well so we weren’t concerned. Now Cyrus never naps and if he does, he is generally awake all night. Oh well, the quiet was nice in the car. Haha!

Now, every time I have ever been to Manchester, it has always taken a ridiculous length of time. Always get stuck in traffic or lost. However, this time around, it only took us 2 and a bit hours to get to Manchester. Finding our hotel for the night however, took about another hour. The sat nav likes to take us down horrible tight, winding, pitch black, country roads. It was a nightmare. I hate those types of roads anyway. Never mind when I don’t know where we are. Eventually we found the Knutsford Premier Inn that was to be our home for the night. We had tried to book the Manchester Airport one but there was no availability so we chose this one instead.

We checked in and went to our rooms. We had to have 2 rooms as there is 5 of us. The plan was for me and Seren to stay in one and the boys to stay in the other with dad.

We chilled together in the one room for a while and got a few bits from the vending machine. The vending machine was becoming an obsession with Cyrus. He loved putting the money in and pressing the buttons. The fact that you got chocolate as well just made it the most wonderful thing ever!

Eventually, Norm and Phoenix decided they were ready for bed. Cyrus decided to stay with me and Seren. He was awake until around 1am which isn’t bad considering the long nap he had. I’m a bit of a night owl anyway so it didn’t matter.

We were off to Paris tomorrow!

Great pre-travel day. My dd who is 18 still falls asleep if we are in the car for more than 10 minutes. We once went on a coach trip to Germany and she slept for nearly the whole 12 hours! Looking forward to the next day. X

Thanks for reading. I'm pretty similar. Something about the lull of the tyres on the road gets me (and my eldest) every time. Can''t say it's ever worked for 12 straight hours though haha.
