Think a smallish gift in that case with some cash for spending or saving for something special. You can wrap cash up in layers/boxes so it looks bigger... ?

So he likes boxes and Nintendo, does he have Nintendo Labo yet? They are basically cardboard Nintendo accessories (like a VR headset, fishing rod, keyboard) that you build yourself: labo.nintendo/

I know someone who received an old car engine and a tool set, at about the same age. Loved it. Eventually went on to work on tractors.

What a subscription for something that you can do together? Eg for dd bday we got her a kiwico ‘tinker crate’ subscription - that one is science and engineering but I know there are others based on crafts etc, and I’m sure other companies do similar. I sometimes find that just having the ‘stuff’ isn’t enough for dd... she likes to have a structure and an end goal.
