Mobile My Second child now has a (probable) asd diagnosis 😢

My 8 yo daughter was diagnosed at 6. My now 6 yo son has had an assessment today and he too most probably has autism. I knew my daughter was, I expected it but my sons diagnosis has really floored me. I thought it was selective mutism and he was just quirky. He had the assessment today, he ‘failed’ a lot but was good at some. I’ll get a full report in the post. Consultant is almost certain he is autistic but wants it clarified with a special asd communication assessment by salt team. This will be done within the next three months. I can’t believe I missed it, I was so focussed on my daughter (I love her but she’s hardwork and demanding, son is so chilled out) I did nt notice his needs. Watching the assessment and listening to questions he was asked today it was so obvious. Kicking myself. I just feel a bit sad about it all really.

It won’t change anything in our house-they are both my two fabulously quirky funny children I just need to be more mindful of him as well now.

Is it common to have a second asd child. I’m now more than convinced it’s me/my genes. They are both so similar to me.

Sorry just needed an off load.

Please don’t blame yourself for anything!
ASD effects more boys than girls app... or maybe it’s just the girls sometimes mask it’s better...
As you say I wouldn’t change anything in our house either... my DS brightens our life with his laughter, love & joy...even if things can sometimes be a little bit ‘black & white’ & a lot of hard work.
Stay strong!

Hi
Please don’t beat yourself up about it. Remember that all autistic kids also have their own personalities. My eldest was diagnosed at 3 years old. My second son wasn’t diagnosed until he was nearly 8. I was the same, adamant he wasn’t. It affects them in different ways and they are both so different in their personalities. Eldest is quiet, anxious and fits neatly into the high functioning/Aspergers criteria. Youngest is loud, brash and also has ocd and Tourette’s so very different. They are now 21 and 23. Both are working and driving and lovely young men that I am very proud of.
Now they are grown up we can look back and see similar traits in their Dad, and both their Grandads. I definitely think there is some genetic link although not proven yet. My friend also has two sons with asd.
Keep positive, there are lots of positives to autism that people sometimes forget. Be proud of your fabulously quirky, funny kids.

We have 4 with asd,and other conditions including dyslexia etc. Please dont blame yourself,it can run in families, but also they present differently in many ways.My eldest is 24 and very intelligent, wasnt picked up for a long time,my dd 19 ,my ds14 and ds8.ds8 I didn't pick up on until one day at an appt for my ds14 we noticed some strange similarities, and it still took many years for a diagnosis. We were even told at one point he was just mimicking his older brother🙄 but then my other children without neurological issues didnt do that!

My daughter took a fair few appointments (so much harder I think with girls and they thought adhd at first) but son was just one appointment. Obviously still need salt assessment and that might change things but paed consultant seemed pretty certain with it.
I just thought he was quirky.
