Mobile Slow cooker Gammon advice

About to put some gammon on and can't remember if I usually leave the plastic that holds it together on or not? I know I leave it on to boil but what about in the slow cooker will it matter?
Also I usually change from high to low but have seen a lot of you do it on low for 8 hours. Would it's be better as don't want to over do it? It's only 750g. Might try coke but worried my dd will realise as she has a thing about flavours. I usually just do it in water. Is it sweeter in coke?

I take the plastic off and leave it on low for around 8 hours, I use coke, then when its done rub a mixture of honey and mustard on then blast it in a hot oven for 20 mins. I find the coke better than water it keeps it more succulent. Got to be proper coke though not diet

Take the plastic bit off, I do it for 2hrs on high or 4 on low in water, then drain this off. This gets rid of if a lot of the salt/salty taste
Clean the pot and put it back on for another 2h high 4 hr low with pear cider, yummy

Thanks I took the plastic off and ended up doing it on high for a bit then low. Did it in a bit of coke and don't think dd noticed from the small amount she tried.

A bit late, but when I did a campfire stew version, it said to cut off as much fat as possible, so the plastic had to go.
I did mine for about 8 hours on high as it was supposed to fall apart.

I take the plastic off. I buy a 750g one too. I spread some dark brown soft sugar on the bottom of the cooker, rest the joint in this and then also spread some on the fatty bit. I have cooked on low for 8 hours and also high for 4 and both have been fine. I have found that 4 on high seems to be more slice-able, whereas 8 on high seems to be less slice-able and kind of just falls apart. Either way it is always really tender and flavoursome. This is a non-smoked one.
