Thanks everybody I understand things a bit better now and I am trying to get hold of a recommended plumber/CH engineer (of course because everybody recommends him he's really hard to get hold of)
Mom used to have the boiler serviced regularly so I know it's safe and it's only about ten years old. Is that old for a boiler? I wouldn't know.
I will ask him about a HIVE system that sounds like a good idea and anyway two of the radiators are in stupid places (one is behind the living room door so that you can't open the door flat against the wall ) so I can get those moved as well.
It seems like my dad just got the quickest and cheapest job done when they moved in. Which is just like him. As long as it worked he was happy he didn't bother about aesthetics and used to drive my mom mad with it

It has been proven that heating a house as and when you need it is far more effective than the old approach of keeping it at a temperature.

This is why most houses use a combination of timer and thermostat.

Not having a timer is old school and inefficient.

We've not used a timer for I don't know how long. Thermostat is set to freeze point only and I just boost it when we need it on.

Last thing I read said the opposite.

Our thermostat is set to 19 all the time, can’t have the house cold with toddlers. Our heating bill isn’t high at all.

Even that article says there’s a for and against it... oh well I guess each to their own way.

The CH engineer came today and was nonplussed to have to confirm no, there is no timer
He's coming back next week to sort it out for me
