Iron tablets

Hi

Hoping posting about this will put my mind at ease. I had blood tests recently and have just had a call from the dr to say I have an iron deficiency and they are prescribing me tablets before it gets too bad and I end up anemic.

Tell me about iron tablets, he started telling me all about the side effects so i'm panicking a bit now... I know its not major.



On a better note everything else was ok.

If you are not anemica yet then you will probably be on a lower dose which should cause less side effects should you experience them

I've been on and off iron supplements for years and the main side effects I have are the feeling sick/queasy & constipation the higher the dose the worse that tends to be to start with
They do tend to turn your poop really dark/black but that's normal

thank you... i'm not sure of the dose but he said start on 1 and increase to 2 if okay with 1. Will pick them up on saturday when we do our shop.

I guess I should expect constipation then... joy...

I've been on them a few times, the only side effect I had was constipation. The next time I had to take them I told the doctor about the constipation and he prescribed me a different brand, I didn't have any side effects with that one.

Do you remember what they were Helen?

I'm reading vitamin c helps absorption.. maybe i should take a vit c supplement too? Don't really want to drink OJ as I get heartburn.

I didn’t really get any side effects from them. Not that I remember anyway.

I'm not 100% sure, but I've googled the different brands, and the ones that didn't agree with me were definitely ferrous sulphate. The other ones that I was OK with, I think they were ferrous fumarate. Sorry it was a long time ago.

hiya no worries, I asked on the off chance you remembered. Thank you for googling about it. I think I have been prescribed the ferrous fumarate 210mg. I've rang up to speak to him again as I need to know how to take it with lansoprazole, he failed to tell me that!

I'm the same no problems with ferrous fumarate but sulphate was horrid.
