Great walk today !

A friend and I took a walk out to a dig that’s going on, on the island just now - a Neolithic chambered tomb with a Bronze Age addition. Look up UCLan Archaeology & Anthropology on FB if anyone wants to see 3D visuals of what it was like and to see their finds 😊
I’m trying not to overload photos - put in a few of the beach we walked across to get there.

Wonderful beach (think I still have some sand from that beach about my body ! )

I met an archeologist lady on the flight from Sanday to Kirkwall and had a nice chat - she has kids in Hackney and says her commute from Kirkwall to Sanday is much better than her old drive on M25 and I couldn’t agree more ! I bet she works at that dig ?

You probably do still have the sand 😂

She may well do ! Some of the Orkney Archaeological team were out. We were chatting to the uni students from Lancaster Uni who were just so enthusiastic and excited about it all - they were so lovely !

It was a great morning ! The students were so welcoming and excited to share information. Well worth the trek out and the aches and pains I’ll feel later 😂

OP. In your Photo No 2 is that the Pit/Tomb as they uncovered it?

If so what a fantastic find and one wonders at how well it must have been constructed way back then not to have all collapsed over the ages.

Orkney is really a treasure trove - I saw so much in such a short period of time. Skara Brea is 3100BC and had flushing toilets ! (Of a sort) - covered over by sand until last century it is intact

Wile I was on Sanday we heard of a huge intact Viking monument being uncovered in someone’s garden - the UK media didnt even pick up the story, it is such an amazing place (I want to go back ASAP)

Yes ! It’s is amazing that it’s so intact. There is one split section in photo 5. That could have been caused by the Bronze Age building.
They first did a dig there in 2019 and in the first section there was a kist (wooden chest) with the remains of an 8 year old child. This year they’ve found some polished stone balls just at the entrance. They’re not really sure what they were for, so more investigating needed.
