High Blood Pressure and Existing Travel Insurance

Hi - for the last two weeks I have had weekly check ups with my doctor to monitor my blood pressure and he confirmed today that I will have to take medication for the foreseeable future to hopefully regulate it. My annual travel insurance ends in January and as you will see from my countdown I'm travelling to Orlando in November.

I will of course inform them of my condition as it needs to be added in case I took ill out there. But what I wanted to ask - is there anyone who can tell me how much extra they had to pay when they informed their insurance company of the same condition. Thanks

There is no standard supplementary premium. Some insurers don't load their premiums for high blood pressure but most do regard it as an extra risk and charge accordingly. When calculating it they also take into account age and other conditions if any.

If you have an annual policy in place now then (i am not 100% sure) I believe that they cant charge you more to cover your trip in nov. I think that they either have to agree to cover it or cover the cost of you to cancel the trip.Hopefully someone else will be along with accurate knowledge on your rights before you ring them.

As soon as you know you have any form of medical condition or illness you must inform your insurance, even if you have an existing policy otherwise your current policy will be invalid if you make a claim further down the line.

I would even inform them of any visits or checkups at the doctors you have had recently as well.

Never assume anything when it comes to medical insurance as ANY company will attempt to worm their way out of the policy, the insurance companies are not our best friends (as their adverts tend to make out) they are there to take your money and pay the share holders, so they will not even think twice about not paying you out.

I now have to get specialised insurance due to a recent diagnosis of Autism, what makes me really angry is that you don't catch Autism I have had it all my life, yet I never had to pay more for my insurance until last year..

Not strictly true. My policy specifically says not to bother them unless the doctor says I'm unfit to travel for the annual policy. They only want to know of any new conditions at renewal. Granted, mine is probably more of an exception rather than the rule, but the policy small print will say.

Yes I realise you need to let them know everything. I was just pointing out that they can't just charge you extra, I believe they need to continue cover for your trip or payout for cancellation.

My husband takes tablets to control his blood pressure and I contacted Llyods travel insurance which is with our bank account. The lady on the phone said that even though it has not increased the insurance at all that it should be recorded on the policy, which it now is.

I phoned up our insurance (Nat West with a paid bank account) and they said thanks for letting them know and no extra charge.

I have an annual policy with Axa and I don't have to tell them of any new conditions until it is time for renewal unless I am advised not to travel on medical reasons.
