Virgin / delta and I assume klm have quite a small cabin bag measurement. I had to check all the sizes when I bought ours as it many ‘cabin’ bags were too big.

However they were never measured at any point so maybe I was overly cautious.

We're going to be hand luggage only for our February holiday but we're only going for a week so it shouldn't be too hard.

Certainly going to be looking up this Marie Kondo packing method though.

No, you did the right thing. If everyone took over-sized hand luggage then there wouldn't be enough room in the overhead lockers for it all. That's why airlines are so strict about it.

I’m dreading trying to find room for my hand luggage bag next year on the transatlantic flight (it was bad enough before on the US internal flights).

Does everyone who goes hand luggage only manage to fit their cases in the area above their own seats?

I have a 100% record of bag placement thus far and that is with 4 of us, sitting close together and full sized hand baggage each. I have never had a problem accessing it in flight either.

Hoping it reassures you.

We've travelled with hand luggage only a few times and it's been fine. We're happy to use whatever shampoo and shower gel is provided, which cuts down on the toiletries we need to take. Roll rather than fold clothes and you can get loads in. BA have a 23kg hand luggage allowance, plus a personal item (back pack, laptop bag etc). Our biggest problem isn't clothes, it's all the "stuff" my husband likes to take

We don’t go hand luggage only. On internal flights we usually end up having to put our small bags above someone else’s seats as ours have already been filled by someone sitting further up the plane.

Not always directly above by seat but certainly in the near vicinity. I am not concerned about exactly which locker they are in. And if they have to be checked it’s not the end of the world either. Although it eliminates the big bonus of getting quickly out of the airport but it’s not a disaster.

Done hand luggage twice... once on BA ( and they of course have a massive allowance) and again on Virgin 3 weeks ago. I admit we do buy bags for the return flight as we buy too much. 3 weeks ago we left with hand luggage only but came back with two extra large hold bags... we love getting off at MCO, straight through security ( husband holds an American passport so we never wait long) and straight up to the monorail. We were out of the airport and in the rental car in less than 30 minutes. We bought toiletries on the first night...
