Glad I came across this thread, have just booked Virgin Light for the princely sum of £281 for next May, but thought I was being a bit daft contemplating hand luggage only.

We’ve just come back from a 3 week trip, when I unloaded my case when I got home I hadn’t worn probably 60% of the clothes, and none of the shoes! It was all new stuff aswell as I’d lost a tonne of weight before I went, so it just had to be done. I also binned a lot of the toiletries to save on weight on the way home, making room for things I bought out there that I didn’t really need.

Now I’m looking forward to being ‘free’ of excess baggage, and if needs be will buy a big hold-all out there for the return and pay £45 to virgin.

One question if anyone can help tho, I was thinking of using vacuum bags, but as we are hotel and not villa this year, would there be any way of suctioning them on the way back?

You can get the roll up suction bags. I've used the big ikea sandwich bags to roll up outfits, say I have an AK outfit with a pair of shorts and a couple of tops, I put them in a sandwich bag and pushed the air out then sealed it. Works a treat for some clothes and I reuse them so the bags I used this year were from 2017 (so were the outfits probably &#128584 doesn't work for everything for example I couldn't get my DH shorts in a sandwich bag but roll up bags like this work without a vacuum cleaner:

We did hand luggage on the way out this year, I thought my husband was mad, but went along with him. In the end, it was actually really easy. I had loads of space left in my case and was only about 5kgs in weight. We bought travel size toiletries and used them at the airport hotel the night before, and simply went to walmart our first night of arrival and bought some shower gel etc. We bought a case each on the way out and simply brought those home. Would happily do it again.

We've also booked economy light direct flights with Virgin end of April next year. Our stay is 8 nights at the Clarion and 4 nights glamping near the Everglades. Not planning any posh meals out, so no need for dressy clothes. We've done that before with signatures restaurants on the DDP, this time is strictly budget 😉

I saw this too! Can you update when you get it and comment on the weight and quality of it please, I’d be ever so grateful

There was another at Wilko, that someone mentioned, but that appears to be out of stock or discontinued.

I have just finished packing. We have all our clothes and shoes in our 3 cabin suitcases. We have an extra cabin bag for the bits and pieces we need for the flight or just want closer. We have never done hand luggage only but set myself the challenge!

We’ve done hand luggage twice now. You can also have a backpack as your personal item as long as it’s not too big to fit under the seat. All of our things for on the plane are in the backpack.

We had considered paying for an extra case on the way home but in the end we didn’t feel we needed too.

We flew with Delta and did end up gate checking the bags a couple of times. Once we just volunteered as it’s was our return journey and we didn’t need them. And on the way out we were moved into another flight and as we were boarding. They said all remaining bags will be checked. That was a bit disappointing as it meant we had to wait for them at MCO and we had been looking forward to walking straight out. But it wouldn’t stop me doing hand luggage again.

Edited at 07:40 AM.
