I usually bring along a book or magazine with me just for the purpose of keeping myself entertained while getting through US immigration! You could get him a book/magazine or maybe one of those activity books to keep him entertained?

Fab idea! My kids love a "Florida chat"... we talk about where we want to eat, what rides we want to do, what's the park we`re most looking forward to etc. I see so many families all gazing at phones etc and not actually communicating with each other, which I think is quite sad
