Cost of tips was one of the reasons we've stuck with qsdp for next time. We did enjoy the majority of the meals but averaging $35 a day on top of the credits really added up over the holiday.

The extra few grand on the price of your holiday for staying on site is were Disney get you to pay over the odds for food and guarantee you only eat at their restaurants. They don't get to being one of the richest companies in the world by giving away free food to millions of on site guests.

Yes we know that! No one staying onsite is naive to that. No one is disagreeing with you on that. But it’s a fact that during free dining the dining plan is free!

A bit off the DDP subject, but we are down in the Keys at the moment, and today was the first time we got our bill at the end of the meal and the 3 tipping options were 18%, 20% and 25%. Eek! I’m another person who was always reasonably ok with the 15% thing but 25%? And this was in a family run ‘diner’ type of place where we had gone for lunch. Plus the tipping figures were calculated on the tax included amount. Of course I tipped, as I always do, probably around 17% on the pre tax amount in the end. We’re eating at home tonight, there’s no tipping at Publix lol.

Two thousand quid over the price of villa free. That's my point, if you pay two grand over the price of a villa, the food essentially is two grand.
Port Orleans for next August comes in at 3,200 quid on the Disney site, a villa only costs 1,300, it's not free. it's a gimmick. You're paying for it in the cost of your room.

The food isn't £2000 though as a villa holiday is not the same as staying onsite, the point being made is that it would still be £3200 at PO next August when the free dining offer finishes unless they do a free night offer or room discount. So if you book during the free dining offer because you want to stay onsite and not in a villa it is free.
Yes it is cheaper to book the villa but not everybody wants to stay in a villa or it doesn't suit their family or they may just want to stay onsite.

You’re comparing two different things. I don’t want to stay in a villa. I want to stay onsite at Disney. So when they offer free dining the Dining plan is free with the room. The food is not £2000 because I don’t want to stay in a villa. Yes I’m paying full price for that room but I get that. It’s not a gimmick it’s a sales tool like any other.
You clearly have an issue with the cost of Disney rooms and I have no idea why unless you resent the cost because it’s more than you want to pay but you really want to stay onsite. Or if you’re doing this to wind me up then job done. I get so sick of “free dining isn’t free” posts when it’s a fact that it is. |

We had the DDP for part of our split stay this year...tipping was always around 18-20%... we spent a lot this year
We said we werent going back next year...no way.. So now flights are booked for next year..! ...we are staying in a villa for the whole duration and will be doing, not just offsite meals but meals in villa from Target / take aways etc... need to keep costs down as much as we can as we didn't actually budget for 2019 at all |

It’s always been more expensive than offsite but it’s obviously more expensive now due to the poor exchange rate.
If people are happy to pay the prices then that’s all that matters I guess.

100% agree with this, I personally feel that DDP is the worst thing that happened to Disney Dining (for us, obviously NOT for Disney!), meal prices have been hiked up exponentially and they're also now incredibly rushed.
We generally always have a car and go offsite to eat now, whereas 10+ years ago we rarely had a car whilst staying onsite.
