Rocking in the Rockies: Day 7 Sheridan

Monday 1 August - Sheridan

There definitely is something in the water in Thermopolis as we all slept really well and woke up at a much more sensible time this morning. The hotel did do a "continental breakfast" in the lobby but it was some fairly crappy coffee and various pre-packaged muffins etc. We grabbed a couple of them but decided we might try breakfast out somewhere on the road.

As we walked back from the lobby to our room, we found a note on the car. When he parked up, Paul didn't notice any parking lines and so just parked outside the door. However, we noticed this morning that we had parked across two spaces The note asked "How much space do you need to park your crummy car?" which was partly fair enough but a little rude. The parking may have been rubbish but the car was quite nice! It did make Paul slightly paranoid about parking for the rest of the trip though - we had to keep checking he was actually in a space . . .

Crummy car parking

We soon hit the road, heading across the Big Horn mountains to Sheridan. It was a bit of a detour on the way to Yellowstone but it sounded like a nice place and we wanted to drive over the mountains.

The plan was to visit a nice sounding diner in Worland for breakfast but unfortunately when we got there, we found it was shut on a Monday We pressed on through Ten Sleep and then through the Big Horn National Forest. There were some lovely views and Paul and I drove the kids slightly mad by making reference to the Joe Pickett books at every opportunity ...

We eventually arrived at Buffalo and spotted the Bee cafe that looked like a good breakfast spot. Unfortunately, they had stopped serving breakfast just before we arrived. They did, however, do a really good lunch which we had instead - bowls of chilli with sandwiches that were really tasty.

The kids found these metal sheep across the road and decided to pose like this, even though they were really hot to the touch!

We had another Finbar Saunders moment as we stopped for gas in Buffalo as the gas station was called "Kum and Go". There was much guffawing and photos had to be taken.

With the car refuelled, we set off again and it wasn't too long before we were at the Mill Inn in Sheridan. It is a really nice hotel in a converted Mill, and not too far from the Town Centre. Our room was great - plenty of space, with a separate sitting area and two sinks - one inside the bathroom and one outside, making for a much less fraught morning! The decor was also cute, with horse prints on the bedcovers and curtains.

We headed into the centre and looked around the shops. Paul wanted to go to Kings Saddlery, a famous Western store, and we enjoyed mooching around and looking at all the saddles and ropes. There was the usual debate about whether or not to buy another cowboy hat - in the end the decision was not. We also noticed that there was a Boot Barn on the main street and the sale was still on . . . I hadn't intended to buy any boots on this trip but there was a really cute pair and they were on sale, so it would have been rude not to get them. Plus there really isn't any such thing as too many boots!

After shopping, we called to Walmart for supplies on the way back to the hotel. I had read geoffa's report about their trip to Wyoming and he mentioned trying Wyoming Whiskey, so we also called to a Liquor Store to get a small bottle of it.

Heading back into the centre later on, we decided to eat at the Cowboy Cafe which got good reviews on tripadvisor. The food was typical Western fare with chicken fried steak and elk sausage - all very tasty. We also managed a meat-free offering for Hannah so everyone was happy.

They also did a good pie selection - we decided on one between us as the portions were huge. There was then a debate about which flavour to pick, especially as the boys refused to believe that peach pie was a "thing". In the end, we went for boysenberry as none of us had tried that before and it was very tasty indeed.

Sheridan is bigger than Thermopolis but with a similar easy Western charm. There is a lot of art on the street and it's a nice place to just wander around. We found this slightly miserable looking rhino just down the road.

Then there was a Big Horn sheep.

Back at the hotel we found some episodes of Criminal Minds (love that show!) and watched those before bed. Fortunately nothing too scary happened so we could all sleep soundly!

They are super cute - round toes with red leather uppers. There is a picture of me wearing them later in the trip . . .

Love all the guffawing about the place names and big horn sheep, also how rude about the parking. I totally agree there is no such thing as too many boots. Looking forward to my foot healing and getting some next summer.

Omg that note, too funny. Poor hubby being paranoid.
I am laughing at the Viz on tour gags. Very improper.
Another great day, just love looking at these towns, so much to take in.
Food sounds good too... How can the chaps not know peach pie is a thing, tsk tsk.
And more elk... In the food today though !

I will never understand what the owners of Kum and Go were thinking when they named it.

I hate when people park over two spaces, but it was an honest mistake. Also, if the people who were next to you were parked badly, sometimes you have to park badly. Then of course if they leave before you, it looks like you were wrong. I wonder if that's what happened if you didn't see lines?

Enjoying the trip report.
