Geoff, sorry to hear your news, you might want to post your question about insurance with pre-existing conditions separately - I know a few people (on Facebook) who have found much better deals on insurance but sadly I wasn't pay more attention than that so ask in a separate thread.

We did Route 66 Chicago to LA on a bus tour a couple of years ago and it was awesome - hope you can find an affordable insurer and hit that road!
