Xmas lights

Hi, does anyone buy christmas lights, and if so do they work ok with a transformer. I always see great ones, even some musical ones but have never bought them before.

It should be ok but the cost of tranformers may make it too expensive. Industrial tranformers cost £60 and you would have to change the plug as well. They are ugly, large and yellow (search 110v tranformers in on screwfix website). There are possibly some other types around that have a US socket on but I would be wary of ebay ones as there are a lot of fakes on there.

This is from my husband as he sorts this sort of thing out. We always buy lights when we are in Florida just before xmas, we,ve had some bargains in Joanna's , Michaels& Walmart, he says we run 6 lots of lights off one transformer that he bought off eBay for £30. All you have to do is add up the total wattage from the boxes & then that would be the wattage of the transformer you need to buy. No need to change the plugs, if you buy one off eBay they will have a British plug on it. We buy extension leads that you can link all the lights together from Walmart, they are not too expensive.

go for it

We bought loads back last year and like the previous poster says its really easy to set up. We had a great display and even used one of those boxes where music plays and the lights flash in time to the music. (from Lowes about £100)
You just look on the box and the wattage is stated, you can link up to 7 sets in a row connecting them end to end using the connectors provided. The lights we bought were from Lowes too (like B&Q on sand lake road) were about $3 for 80 lights and cover about 7 mtrs each set. You can get multi coloured or single colours in the sets.

We are back again this year and going to buy a few more sets to compliment the display luggage allowance permitting.

We got a large transformer from amazon for about £100 and it runs everything we need through the two outlets on the box. It has a uk plug on the wire end and both uk and usa plug sockets to plug the lights in

If you buy the LCD lights they are about double the price, but they use far less power and watts so you can run many more through the same voltage reducing box.
