Car Hire Price?

Hi all

Started planning and doing our budget for our west coast trip in Sept 2020.

Can anyone advise on a ballpark figure we would be looking at paying for car hire? A car big enough for 2 adults/3 cases.

Picking up in San Francisco (I understand going back to the airport to pick up is cheaper than downtown?) and dropping off at LAX 13 nights later.

We have hired a standard SUV for next year from 22nd August for 14 days from Vegas and dropping back in San Francisco and it is £531

My standard suv from Alamo, pick up sfo to dropping at lax 14 days later in August this year is costing £560. If you aren’t fussed about the vehicle and happy to go down a couple of classes you might do it for closer to £400.

Last Easter, I picked up a RAV4 from Budget at San Francisco city centre, close to Union Sq and a block away from the Bay Bridge ramp. The hire was for 11 days with a drop off at LAX.

The price was £273.47 with CDW for a pristine car with 1500 miles on the clock. It was more than roomy for 4 of us plus all luggage for a road trip.

It really depends on the rental company and what they are trying to do with their fleet.

Couple of years ago we got a full size SUV from San Fran to Vegas over 23 nights in July/August for £560.

It was through Hertz as part of a mail campaign where the were obviously trying to leave vehicles about to re-position them.

I'd look at getting something cancelable in early is when you see a price you are OK with and then see if you can better it as time goes on.

BA do some good fly drive offers with Avis but does mean flying with BA though.

Try Andy at DFCH - he doesn't just do Florida.
We used him last year for a pickup at Seattle and drop off at LAX - there was an unavoidable one-way fee, but he got it down lower than anybody else could.

Thanks! We've booked with him for Florida this year, had no idea he did other locations.

Getting really likeable quotes on BA fly-drive too (based on this years dates) so that's an option also.
