Laptop advice - photoshop & Cad

My daughter is at university suing a Theatre Design degree. Lots of photoshop and CAD work.

She has a Surface Pro 4 i5 with 4gb memory and a 128 ssd. She bought it 4 years ago but due to a fault they replaced it last summer so itís practically brand new. Unfortunately itís just not up to the task and she is really struggling with it. It just doesnít cope with the software she needs to use.

Iím looking to replace it but I donít really want to spend £1000 unless I absolutely have too.

What do you think is the most important area to upgrade? Iím thinking memory. I can get 8gb from £650 but if I look for 16gb we are looking at £1000.

She mentioned a gaming laptop? Not for gaming just for the power.

Any advice greatly appreciated?

For CAD we recommend getting the best processer you cantop spec i5 or i7 . In regards to memory it would depend on weather your doing 2D or 3D renderings. If 2 8gb would be the minimum 3D will require 16 GB it really depends on the complexity of what they are doing.
It also depends what CAD application they are using some are very graphic card intensive.

DM me if you want to ask more questions or want help looking

I think Keith has given some sound advice, if you can afford it i7 and 16GB and a really good graphic card. I use Autocad, Revit, 3DS Max and rendering. Try looking at refurbished too.

She uses photoshop elements 2018. Itís a stand-alone one, not part of the adobe online suite.

And Autodesk AutoCad. Only 2d.

An i5 processor with 8GB RAM should do it (that's what my Surface Pro 4 is) but if you can afford it then an i7 processor (or i9 if you can get a decent deal) and 16GB RAM is the better option for futureproofing.

Her surface pro 4 only has 4gb which I think is the issue.

I7 plus 16gb is looking like £1000 but Iím thinking if we scrimp it will be a false economy if itís not upto the job.

I was looking at this one

That looks pretty good. Having the SSD/HDD combo is great - it's what I use on my desktop. I run just the OS on the SSD and all my data on the HDD. Keeps things nice and quick.

Thatís a very good laptop and will be good for a few years Iíd really depends on do you want something to get though 1 or 2 years or longer. If your willing to spend 1000 there are some better speck laptops out there.
