Ignoring the extra drivers benefit it looks like you're paying around 15p a gallon for the gas - that's a bit cheaper that the Wawa on 192/Avalon

We just return empty. For the $5 or so extra it saves the hassle of hunting around for fuel on the way to the airport, especially if your flying from Miami.

For us it’s full to empty every time. They are welcome to a couple of my gallons if left in the tank.

For those of you who fill up before return many miles from the airport with the thought that the needle won’t move off full, please don’t complain on your next rental when your new cars needle drops quickly off full within a couple miles of collection. It’s just the last renter did the same as you.
It’s always the next renter that suffers.

You haven’t done anything wrong, and I used to do it too. Just highlighting what may happen.

I would normally go for full to empty this year sixty want £90 for a tank of gas. I worked it out myself and max the tank holds £55 that’s one hell of a mark-up

Thanks for all the replies guys. As one o& you has said it seems a fairly equal split.

Just one question if I may. If I decide to go full to full. I recall that the US do the ”pay before filling” procedure. How do I just fill the car up? Do I give them say 20 dollars, the car takes 17 and I go back in to get the change?

Thanks

Shaun.

Yes Yes.

I pay on a card so slightly different. You authorise for it to take a certain amount but it only charges you for what you take

We always pay cash at gas stations (our choice )

Simply pull up at the pump, go inside and say $30 on pump 6 please. It will cut out at $30 but if you can only get $27 in then go inside and get $3 change.

Doesn't work too well if you've parked at pump 8 though

I prefer to return it without refueling and pay whatever they charge to fill up the tank. I will happily consider this part of the price of hiring a car. Don't want to stress about "using up" fuel or fitting in time to stop at a station at the proper location on the last day. Takes my joy away.

Dh, on the other hand, gets more joy out of his holiday if he feels he's been efficient with his money. He enjoys pumping petrol in new places and feeling like a local, so he wants to fill it up himself. He also enjoys "the hunt" of finding a station that charges a few p less per gallon... Heh.

Choose whatever helps you enjoy your holiday more, I'd say. And horses for courses.

Took a car back to Sanford years ago and the low fuel light had been on for ages. Typical bloke, told myself it would get there and did not want to put any more fuel in. Felt the car cough pulling into the airport, but it got me to the drop off. As we walked away with the cases the rental guy got in and it would not start. Quickly high tailed it out of there. 🤭
