Japanese train travel help - Kevin_cambs_UK!

OK, Kevin, here are my train questions:

We arrive at Tokyo Haneda (HND) and will be heading to the Granbell Hotel Shinjuku
2-14-5 Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo
what train to we need to take?

The next day, we will be leaving Shinjuku and heading over to Tokyo Disney, to check in to the Ambassador. What train do we need to take?

On Friday Oct 27th, we will be heading to Kyoto. I assume that we will get a shinkansen from Tokyo station to get to Kyoto? What train do we take from Disney (or is there only 1?) to get to the shinkansen?
Do they have trains in Kyoto? We are staying at a ryokan in Kyoto and I am not sure how to get there:
Yadoya Dejavu
45 Daikoku-cho Nakagyo-ku
Kyoto, japan 604-8031

On October 30, I return home and I will be flying out of Narita (NRT). I am staying at Super Hotel Lohas Tokyo Station
Chuo-ku Yaesu, 2-2-7, Chuo Ward, Tokyo which is supposed to be near the Tokyo Station train station. What train do I need to take to Narita? I would be leaving around lunch time, as my flight out is at 5:30pm.

I don't know if we are getting a rail pass, but please tell me your thoughts on the matter. We are staying at Tokyo Disneyland for 4 nights and may end up going in to Tokyo a couple of times after our first night there (when we arrive from our Chinese leg of the trip).

Thanks for your help on this! I can't believe the trip is almost here after a year of planning!

I will answer each in turn...I will provide what I would say is the easiest option might not necessarily be the quickest or cheapest although the cost is probably a couple of quid!

Haneda to Shinjuku

On leaving customs etc find yourself a train ticket machine and get yourself a Suica or Pasmo card. Just like the Oyster card in London

Select English menu and get one. Deposit is 500 yen and then stick say 1000 yen on

This will make all your travel around Tokyo so much easier

Then locate the Tokyo monorail and board the train to hamamatscho

Now the thing here is the train terminates here so there is no chance of getting off at the wrong stop

When here locate the Yamamote line which is shown as green and head towards Shibuya and Shinagawa or Shinjuku

You will get on this train all the way to Shinjuku and get off you cannot miss getting off its JY17. As this line is circular and you get the train going in the opposite direction you can still get there!

The issue you will have is that it will be busy and so I recommend you locate your hotel in Shinjuku and work a route back to the station and then work out the exit needed using street view

When you get off in Shinjuku the station has around 200 exits so you need to know where you are going. So when we stayed there last year I worked out the route on street view so I could visually recognise landmarks

Also google suica on YouTube to get familiar with the ticket gates at stations cause they are busy and huge. Most stations are almost a city in their owm right!

So that's the first bit!

Part 2

Shinjuku to Disney

Very easy unfortunately you have to go back almost the way you came the previous day!

So back to Shinjuku station locate the Yamamote line and head for shibuya and Shinagawa

Stay on until you reach Tokyo station which is JY1 and get off

Again use the suica card

Then follow signs for the Keiyo line and then take the train to Miahama

If you are unsure when you get there don't worry cause there will be people with Disney stuff on them so when we went we just followed them

It's a bit of a trek from the Yamamote line to the Keiyo line so allow 15 mins

Again not the quickest route but the easiest

You could get the Chuo line etc to Tokyo but there is a local and rapid etc they don't always say where they go to Tokyo and I got on the wrong one once

Getting to Kyoto or this is where it gets complicated!

You need to go back to Tokyo station as above and locate the Shinkansen gates or entrance as we would call it

You need the blue coloured Shinkansen NOT the green

As you are only going to Kyoto and back you could get the rail pass and then use it to book the train back to the airport but it is very borderline as to whether it would break even

Given the task of getting it etc it may be wise to not bother

So when going to Kyoto use the web site hyperdia.com and select what train you want there and back etc

Then print it off in the U.K. and then when in Japan you can use a ticket machine or one of the many ticket offices and show them the print out and they will book the train. I would book this on the day you travel
from Shinjuku to Disney
There are lots of ticket offices and the one at the new southern terrace is very good they speak good English it's very easy to find , just look for the trAvel centre

Now when you have your ticket you are going to have to go thru the gates to the Shinkansen platform

When you do you put in both tickets and also tap your suica card! Otherwise the suica will think you never left Tokyo and when you get back it will not work and you will need assistance at the gate

Now on YouTube there is a channel called only in Japan and one of them he goes to
Kyoto exactly as you do
And he experiences this ticket gate and the process you need to follow

It's on his only in Japan
Go section I will try and find it later

Now I would if I were you take a look at the hyperdia site and familiarise myself with trains etc and then ask any further questions

Donall the same to get back from Kyoto but forget the suica bit but when you reach the Shinkansen gates back into Tokyo station again tap the suica

Phew!

As for getting to the ryokan I would get a taxi as shown on the web site

Part 4 coming later as I must pop out!

Last part is easy

Just look up narita express on the hyperdia website and put your start location as Tokyo and then the narita terminal

Pick your time etc then print it off and then book it when
You are in Tokyo

With the narita express all seats must be reserved in advance so again print it off , find a ticket office and pay your cash !

Any question please just ask , there is a lot to absorb there

My planning paid off after looking at maps and street view cause as I explained to my wife on numerous occasions why i went to do much bother to work this stuff out, the answer has two replies

If I ask someone for directions they will probably answer in Japanese which I can't understand

Secondly, unless it is a very important road, there are no road signs identifying roads so if you are on a hotel on a side street there will be no road signs, plus addresses are not laid out in a sequential manner, rather in blocks based on when they were built

So hopefully that helps a bit!

Thanks so much for your help and advice, Kevin! I was working my 2nd job over at WDW all weekend, so I didn't get a chance to see this until today (when I am supposed to be working at my real job...)

I am off on Sunday before we leave, and while I had downloaded the train app, I will check out you Tube as you suggested. Maybe find a vid of how to operate their fancy toilets while I am at it...
