Problem with lights
We are, of course, going to get a qualified electrician, but we are perplexed by a problem with our living room lights, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions please.
Our living room has 4 spotlights and a light fitting. You switch these on/off separately using a 2 gang (?) switch. Came home this evening and the consumer unit had tripped for the downstairs lights. Switched this back on, and all the lights downstairs work, except for those in the living room. We have checked the bulbs in both the light fitting and spotlights, and they are both ok. We have checked the main light fitting, that’s working ok. We have replaced the double light switch, (there is a single one at the other side of the room just for the main light, but we haven’t replaced that), but neither the spotlights or main light are still not working. The only thing we haven’t checked / changed is the actual spot light fittings, (or the wiring itself obviously). Any ideas please? Edited at 08:45 PM. |

If the bulbs are all ok and the lights were working when you went out then something has happened whilst you were out unless they tripped as you switched them on. There are many possible reasons. You indicate other items are on the same trip so would point to a cable issue of some sort. One possibilty is a wire which may not be fully been connected eg loose screw causing arcing and that could fuse it. If your not sure and you can not visabily see anthing then it is best to consider an electrician.

Sorry can't help but made me remember my DH saying when he was school age his Dad would do DIY in the house. In order to get the door bell to ring, the lights in the dining room alcove had to be switched on... sorry, not helping your situation

Have you swapped the actual bulbs? I know you say you have checked them but try swapping them for bulbs from a different room.
My friend last month went 5 days with no downstairs lights as her's all tripped, when the spark came it turned out to be a faulty bulb that hadn't blown but somehow kept tripping all the lights.

It could be the light fitting it’s self. We had a 6 spotlight fitting in our bedroom. One day without switching it on it just tripped our fuse. It wasn’t the cable ( thank god ) just the fitting. Changed the fitting and put in the old bulbs no problems.

The culprit was actually a light fitting in the hallway, that was somehow affecting the lights in the living room (but was still working). Thankfully All sorted now. Thanks everyone.
