Land in Heathrow terminal 5 then another flight... help!
Hi. We fly from Manchester to Heathrow, then Heathrow to JFK. We haven't got long once landed in Heathrow. The JFK flight is from the same terminal. What do we need to do when we get off the flight? We have one hour to come off the plane and get onto the other one? Is this realistic? Doubt our luggage will make it but we are prepared for that! We then fly to MCO after two nights in New York.

An hour is the minimum allowed for such a connection, but assuming the domestic flight is more or less on time, it is quite doable (albeit with no hanging around).
The good news is that coming off a domestic flight with a same terminal connection, you won’t have to reclear security at LHR T5. The MAN-LHR flight will arrive at one of the low numbered A gates (A1-A3 or A5-A8). Once off the aircraft, you just have a boarding pass check at the checkpoint opposite gate A5, and you can go airside into T5A via lift or escalator. Your LHR-JFK flight on BA will most likely depart from one of the satellite terminals T5B/C, though T5A is a possibility. Check the departure boards in T5A once you are through the boarding pass checkpoint. If it’s B/C, follow the signs towards the centre of the terminal and take the lift downstairs to the shuttle train, which will take you to the relevant satellite terminal. These trains go roughly every 5 mins. Once you reach the satellite, take the lift (quicker than escalator) up to departures and stroll/jog/run as appropriate to your gate. Your luggage has a good chance of making it too, BA does a lot of these transfers. Good luck and enjoy. |

Wow thanks so much for that reply. I really appreciate it. Even if we don't make that flight... there are plenty of other flights to JFK with British airways.. can't believe how many! Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly

My advice would be to try & get seats near the front of the plane on your Manchester - LHR flight & don't hang about when you get off in Heathrow.
An hour with the flight going from the same terminal sounds like you'll have loads of time but T5 is huge & as the previous poster has said your flight to JFK will be going from either the B or C satellite terminal & your Manchester flight will probably land at the main A satellite. When you get off the in Heathrow, follow the signs for transfer passengers & check which satellite terminal your JFK flight is going from. Remember the departure time of the flight is not the latest time that you can show up & board, it's the time that the doors will be closed & the plane pushes back from the stand. Good luck & enjoy your trip.

Realistically, the aircraft doors will be closed at about 10 mins before the departure time and quite possibly the gate doors closed 15mins when final boarding is called.
However, if the luggage is connecting and the PAX is not onboard, this then results in the luggage having to be offloaded causing further delay, hence why some flights will wait depending on the number of connecting PAX's.

If there are lots of flights, could you not have booked the next one? Would rather wait around than be worrying!

We flew EDI-LHR-JFK through T5 a year or so back. Coming off the EDI flight and going to flight connections within T5 there were BA reps meeting people for imminent connecting flights, bringing them to the front of the queue and walking them through the airport to the next departure gate. This enabled us to make our flight... although our luggage didn't and it turned up at our hotel about 15 hours later.

One word of warning - it doesn't matter how many flights there are to NY that day, it matters how many free seats there are in those flights
They won't bump a booked passenger to make way for you, then they'd have to pay two lots of compensation, where as once you are more than 4 hours delayed they don't have to pay you anymore even if you end up delayed by 3 days The deal with a missed connection is you will be placed on the next available flight (which means a flight on which seats are available not the next flight that leaves LHR) |
