The West Coast Road Trip that grew - Day 6 Desert Drive, General Patton Museum, Anaheim

You can find Day 5 Here

Wednesday September 27th 2023

Today involves a long drive to Anaheim with some detours along the way for what caught our fancy on Googlemaps.

We spent the night at the Best Western in Parker. A simple hotel used by many truck drivers.

We were awake reasonably early and did the majority of our packing before heading down to the included breakfast. It was very quiet in the small breakfast room which had opened at 4am. Most of the truckers were long gone by the time we arrived at about 8am. There was a small but perfectly adequate selection for breakfast and we were happy with our choices.

The first part of our trip was to drive to a petrol station just before the California border. Petrol was significantly cheaper in Arizona, $1.50 a gallon cheaper in places.

We set the address for a 76 at Ehrenburg, which was about 45 minutes away. Once again the in car satnav took us via a slightly longer route than Googlemaps had suggested but we got there with some stunning desert scenery on the way.

The petrol station was just off the main highway and was huge. The restrooms were plentiful and clean and the shop sold everything you could get from a motorway service station at home. There was hot food but no seating and the amount of parking outside suggested that customers did not wait long. We used the loos and then stocked up on a couple of gallons of drinking water.

We then drove a few miles to the state border.

We were channelled into lanes for cars or for lorries but I don't know whether we stopped here or just slowed down.

And then we were in California. Our 3rd state in less than a week.

When we were planning we had looked at the option of driving through Joshua Tree national Park but then we saw that by changing our route very slightly we could stop off at the General Patton Memorial museum. So we decided to visit it that instead.

It took just over an hour to get to from the petrol station.

And was located next to a couple of restaurants and a Chevron station (with much higher CA prices.)

The museum is located at what used to be an army training base where soldiers were trained for WWII campaigns in Africa.

There was a lot of information inside the museum about General Patton and WWii. Apparently General Patton had to retake a year at military college as his results were so poor. It turns out you don't have to be the most academic to be a good soldier.

There were lots of displays of uniforms and artifacts from WWII

DH was especially interested in the tank exhibits as he works for a company that makes tank driving simulators for taining purposes.

I do hope his products are more sophisticated than the training simulator that was on show here.

There was also a tank (minus its turret) that you could climb inside

and a few others that were more modern

We were glad to get back into the airconditioning of the main building. It was interesting to read old newspapers of the time and to see how are use of language has changed

and also fascinating to read the conspiracy theories connectes to Pattons death in a car crash shortly after the war ended. Very reminiscent of Princess Diana stories.

The final thing we looked at was a relief model of the training fields that were much vaster than I had imagined.

We were here just over an hour. Well worth a visit if you have an interest in WWII,

We were now heading for Rancho Mirage (just before Palm Springs). DD had asked if we could find a book shop on our trip and having stayed here on our last CA trip we knew there was a Barnes and Nobel. We could also have some lunch at the shopping centre food court so we could kill two birds with one stone.

From here we drove to the Cabazon Dinosaurs just to take photos in the car park

Then we stopped at Cabazon outlets for a loo break. (No shopping)

Our final destination of the day was the Hilton at Anaheim Convention Center.

On our first visit to Disneyland we stayed at paradise Pier hotel, and though it was very nice was certainly not good value for money. Add to that the the building work that was going on both there and next door, we decided to stay a bit further out.

The Hilton was lovely. Once parked up (not free parking in multi story next door) we decided to walk to Downtown Disney for dinner and a bit of window shopping.

It took about 20 minutes to walk there but it seemed much quicker.

It was magical to be at Disneyland again with everywhere decorated for Halloween.

We went to see if we could get a walk up for a table at Naples Ristorante and were told they would text us in about 30 minutes when a table became free. So we wandered around the World of Disney Store until we were called.

We sat outside and had a lovely (if pricey) meal just taking in the surrounding.

After that a slow walk back to the hotel.

It had been a busy but lovely day.
