Why aren't the Nightingale hospitals being utilised

If Manchester ICU beds are close to being ooverwhelmed according to the government why arent they at least preparing the Nightingale place in central Manchester. And where do the staff come from as well for the Nightingales if they are used.

Whisper it very quietly because it doesn’t fit the ‘predictions’ ... possibly because they are not needed.
Like the last time.

When the Nightingale hospitals were constructed was there also an equivalent recruitment of qualified medical personnel to staff this expanded capacity? I have no idea how hospitals are run, but I'd guess that you need an appropriate number of staff for the physical infrastructure that you have? It can't have helped that going in to 2020 the NHS had vacancies for 40,000+ nursing staff, IIRC.

Not being utilised but some are on standby, I really hope they will be used this time as covid hospitals not overspills just in case, then hopefully NHS hospitals can be used for what they were meant too and nothing delayed. I'm in South Yorkshire the Yorkshire one in Harrogate as far as I'm aware was told last week to be on standby. In March didn't a lot of newly qualified staff go straight into the breach so to speak, hopefully that will be same so regular hospital appointments, operations etc etc continue.

Does anyone know whose decision it was to only use the Nightingale hospitals to only a small fraction of their capacity? Was it a clinical decision?

The press release from GM leaders last night said that icu occupancy was at normal levels for October. Some of the figures from government were quoting specific hospitals and not the capacity across GM as a whole. Much misinformation in the war of words. The Manchester Nightingale hospital is on standby and will be ready if needed.

For us most staff were current but being redeployed from services that were being stood down. In the event we did not need to do that and they were redeployed into other areas to meet capacity and demand.

We do have a system in place and are on standby again but I don't envisage mobilising this as we also have community plans to support should we need extra capacity.

The Manchester Nightingale hospital is being prepared for use, it takes a couple of weeks at least to bring it from being mothballed to being usable.

They only took very selective patients last time out (London nightingale) and maxed out at 49 pts. The staff required need specialised skills in the main so there is a lot of robbing Peter to pay Paul. The excel was a difficult environment to work in especially for an acoustic POV . Before they have been used at all nightingales have cost and estimated 220m. That could have paid for a lot of staff for the hospitals looking after all but those 49 nightingale patients

I think they were between a rock snd a hard place with the nightingale. Scenes from Italy of hospitals overflowing were coming through and I can understand why they were built.

I’m not convinced the staffing and practical day to day use was properly thought out though.
