start up on Laptop slow

My laptop HP takes an age to load up on the initial start and when opening the chrome browser.

I have a memory from my last laptop that you can check what programmes start up and you can disable them.

Can anyone recommend a free

Virus checker

and

I used to have a free programme that checked duplicate files.

I need to have a good clear out on the laptop, I have so many files etc I am unsure where to start

The biggest improvement you can make to an older laptop is to change the drive to a solid state drive. This will transform the startup to around 10 seconds.

To check which programs are starting you can use Msconfig, just type this in the run window.

Ccleaner is good for a general tidy up too.
