We always goto York. We'll we love York & it's the closest! Just a shame they don't do the ice sculpture festival still as well.
I was surprised with Newcastle when we went. Not amazing but a pleasent day. Manchester is good, we usually try to stay in Manchester for a couple of nights in December for Xmas shopping.
I would really REALLY avoid Leeds! We went about 10 years ago (staying over in Leeds then doing York the next day) & loved it, but in 2018 we went & it was awful! So much tinyer, food choices terrible & about 4 of the same stall so not much variety.
Add to that we stayed in the easy hotel which concidering it had only just opened it was rough! Paid extra for a room with a window which we got, it was about a foot tall, 6 inches wide, wouldn't open, 6 foot in the air & looked out onto an air conditioner!

I get quite jaded by it all, it is like Disney, they have all become victims of their own success, everywhere good gets overcrowded making it not so enjoyable any more.

Bad Wimpfen in Germany is the best I have ever seen. Genuine hand carved goods and a fairytale village setting.

Lincoln market is nice, it gets busy but they have a one way system, being on my doorstep is handy too 👍

We've done Birmingham, hated it.

Edinburgh loved in the morning, but by mid afternoon it got far too busy. Would go again.

York, again nice in the morning, got a lot busier in the afternoon and evening, but not too bad.

Harrogate was really nice, but was only there in early afternoon, so can't comment on the evenings, but there were some really nice stalls. Would like to go again.

Lincoln was great, although it does get really busy the one way system helps. We did the morning as soon as it opened and then went back later. Going again this year.

Also got Prague booked for 4 days in November which will be our first one abroad. Really looking forward to it this year as Covid stopped us going last year

Lincoln Christmas market is nice - it gets very crowded but feels quite festive with the cobbled streets.

For the last few years we have also visited Harrogate Christmas market. It is much smaller than some others but focusing on Yorkshire produce and businesses so has a more authentic feel. You can also combine it with a trip to Betty's Tea room. There was a show on TV which gives you a flavour of Harrogate:

channel5/show/harrog...ire-christmas/

Both markets only open over a weekend period rather than some of the city markets that operate throughout December.

I am sure its been cancelled for this year? Best double check before

I agree with what others have said about it being crazy busy though. You need to get there first thing to have a chance to get a look at anything.
