Sunpass
Hello everyone!
Our next trip will be the first one using a car. We have read about sunpass lanes for tolls and are wondering whether we should purchase one when we arrive. I have read that Avis provides a toll e-program but they charge you a daily fee on top. We will probably stay in Orlando apart from 1 trip to Clearwater and 1 trip to Nasa center. Should we buy the Sunpass instead? Thank you! |

Keep your eyes open for posts about 'Visitor Toll Pass' being re opened. It's the easiest way to pay tolls without any added admin fees.

We also recommend the Visitor Toll Pass if you are flying into MCO. Go on their web site and register, on arrival go to their desk in the car hire hall and pick up your pass. Return it to them when you finish your trip and then you will only be charged for the tolls you used on your credit card.
Last March we even used it on the Florida Turnpike rushing to get a flight back to the UK, and posted it back from Miami airport in a envelope we had prepared. Hoping they will start the system up again. If this pass isn't started up you can buy a sunpass at Publix and put a small amount on it. Melvin and Lesley

In Florida all cars are Sunpass enabled. All you need do is drive through a toll plaza without stopping and it will kick in by taking a photo of your plate. Your Avis car may have a transponder fitted but it makes absolutely no difference if it's on or off - driving through sets it off.
Or on most roads you can just pay cash (was temporarily stopped but I'm sure it will be allowed again if not already) First toll plaza on 417 south after leaving MCO. To use Sunpass just keep left and don't stop. To pay cash keep right and give the attendant no bigger than a $20 and you'll get change. Most plazas on on/off ramps are unmanned This is a typical unmanned one at j2 off the 417 Mick

Since I'm sad enough to check the site every day - you can at least bookmark it for the future

You might guess that I'm a frustrated poster on the car & driving threads. This tells you about tolls and the few cashless ones. Open "traveller information" and "rental vehicles" - then totally ignore what Avis say. Charges have been out of date for a couple of years - despite Andy at DFCH and me emailing them to get it changed. sunpass/en/about/whe...eSunPass.shtml This screen shot more accurate for Avis M ick

Thanks Gadgey Mick, I'll catch up with you bout this if the US opens it's borders, and if we fly into MCO (or Mia if we absolutely must) and drive down to Bokeelia. As you know we own an awld Fl banger, only taking a one day hire from/to MCO, hence we pay cash on the 417 tolls.
I hire via Budget as there's a depot just off the island - their option to 'pay by plate' is $5.95 a day plus tolls, not bad for a one day hire.

Thank you all so much. The visitor pass sounds like a great option. Would we have to tell avis to deactivate their e-pass then? As we would use the sunpass lane with the visitor pass?
