WWII Avenger aircraft emergency landing into Cocoa Beach, Fl, water

A World War II era aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in the ocean during the Cocoa Beach Air Show on Saturday.

Officials said a TBM Avenger performing in the warbird parade had a mechanical issue and the pilot was able to bring the plane down close to the shore.

If you have to become a member of the goldfish club this seems the way to do it. Close to shore and nobody hurt.

Excellent control. Well done to that pilot.

When I last visited the Valiant Aircraft Museum at Titusville, that aircraft was in the final stages of restoration to flight. A rather sad day and hopefully there is little damage once the salt water is flushed out.

It is a truly excellent museum and often overlooked by tourists, very child friendly.

Pilot certainly did well FamG, hoping that salt water doesn't cause too much damage and they can get the Avenger up and away again.

Sadly, when living in Cambs, I saw a WWII P-38 Lightning go in at Duxford in July 1996. We were in a field across the M11 and watched in horror as retired Sqn Ldr 'Hoof' Proudfoot [Brittania Airways pilot at that time] was unable to regain control after a low-level roll. The P-38 struck the approach end of the paved runway exploding upon impact, and tumbled into an area for civilian aircraft parked on grass next to the runway. Eight were completely destroyed, six others suffered major damage. The force was so powerful an engine bounced along the grass, flipping into the M11 dip where it further bounced off a lorry [from Darlington], landing in the field we were in and sat there smoking. See

The P-38 just missed three B-25 bombers that were waiting near the runway end as 10 P-51 Mustangs were taking off, the Mustangs circled to come back into land and a near miss between them caused a sharp intake of breath.
