Driving from USA to Canada and back
Hi all,
We will be flying into Denver in September and hiring a car and then driving to Saskatoon in Canada to visit a friend and then coming back around in a loop to Denver. I have a few questions if anyone can help: Having read the alamo site conditions it appears you can drive a us hired car into canada without any extra charges or restrictions, has anyone done this? It also seems that if you drive rather than fly into Canada you dont need the ETA for Canada (we have the ESTA for the USA) has anyone done this before? and was it easy enough getting back into the USA with your ESTA printout/UK passport? Many thanks |

From my experience the Us will want to give you a road visa as ESTA is for flying in.
We played dumb as said we had bought ESTA and the waved the fee. Not sure about the Canada Visa as we haven't driven between them since the visa was introduced.

You definitely only need an Canadian ETA if flying in.
Not sure what happens at the border. |

Yes, we picked a car up in Denver a few years ago, full size suv from Alamo. We travelled north through Wyoming, into Montana to Glacier national Park and crossed into Canada and stayed in Calgary, over to Vancouver, back into USA near Seattle and eventualy ended up in LA. No issues whatever

I drove from USA to Canada last Sept. Told the rental company when I picked up the car. I was issued with a form stating it was a hire car and insured. No problem at the border crossing. Just gave passports over, a few questions about why we were going to Canada, how long and that was it. No problems coming back. Only had my ESTA for the USA, not asked for. Have a great trip
