Friend of mine used to do long haul and European holidays with a company called Solos. I suppose in a group of solo holidaymakers the odds of finding congenial company are far better.

I find myself doing more solo trips these days being widowed with grown up children.
While I'd enjoy meeting up with others for a drink or meal, I couldn't be doing with sharing a room or spending a lot of time with them if they weren't already good friends. I like being able to go to bed/get up whenever it suits me or just chilling/breakfasting on the balcony and basically doing whatever suits me. Sharing a room with a stranger would be really weird and spoil that for me so I couldn't do it. Considering how much a trip to Orlando costs, I really wouldn't think any saving on the room would be worth the stress involved but good luck finding someone if you think it would work for you. |

I sometimes do an escorted coach trip if I want to see a few places but can’t face booking it all separately. Ive always met a good bunch of people; usually a handful of singles or sisters or mother & daughter combos. Not just elderly couples by any means. I rarely eat on my own unless I want to and it’s nice to have company when travelling from place to place. There are lots of US tours, some visiting Fla.
If I want a resort or beach type holiday, I’ve found it can work out just as expensive to stay on the Med solo as it is in Florida, so Florida it is ! I’m happiest on my own but it’s always nice to meet up with a Dibber for a drink or bit of shopping. Edited at 10:08 PM. |

I think that is the hard bit, you are the opposite way round to most people I would imagine. If it were me, I could be interested in meeting other people for meals and to share the day with, but I would require my own room to retreat to. I wouldn't want to be doing my own thing in the day and then share a room with a relative stranger at night.
In my late 20s I did some adventure holidays and yoga trips and people were paired up in rooms, but I very quickly outgrew that. |

I’m afraid I would never ever do it again - I’ve had my friendship ruined due to my disaster of a holiday to dlp. I will never share a room with anyone but family ever again - as much as you think you know someone even as a friend it all becomes different when you share a room.
What if you come in at different times and that person is asleep? And you want a bath/shower or room service or to watch the tv/relax? It’s okay that person saying it’s okay (not that my friend did) but you are still so cautious not to disturb that person that it can become a real chore. I didn’t realise how much I value my personal space/privacy and my OH haha until I experienced that last trip |

I did a coach trip once as a solo traveller which required sharing with a fellow traveller. While it's not my favourite thing to share I did survive and we got on fine.
If I could afford it I'd just go single room, but I know that single room supplement can be a killer. If they are awful you only have to see them when you go to sleep/breakfast - and if you do get on you can hang out together.

In your situation where it isn't about meeting people or companionship even for part of the time but purely cost I'd stay somewhere cheaper and have privacy rather than stay somewhere nicer but have to share as it'd be too much of a compromise as Lisa pointed out.
