We went in August with our grandchildren (10 & 14) and they absolutely loved it (and we had gone inadvertently gone during Lobster Fest).

The highlight for them was the jet-ski tour which they absolutely loved, it wasn't cheap but they still talk about it.

Agree re: Key West compared to Gulf but I think it’s a toss up between rest of the Keys and Gulf as both are amazing.

I'd sooner go to the SW Gulf coast though across alligator alley from Miami.

Key largo I can recommend for snorkelling- we did the boat trip out and an amazing experience round the reefs

The keys are amazing! Especially the turtle hospital and the key lime pie factory! If your a lover of key lime pie then imagine a slice dipped in chocolate it was amazing. From key west airport I took a trip to the dry Tortuga national park by sea plane (I hate flying) but that was incredible.
