I didn’t in term time, but I would work over summer. One of my friends worked for Sainsbury’s and it was great. She did a couple of shifts a week and always got work in the holidays. On reflection, I wish I’d done the same. I do think it depends what degree you do. If you have a really high number of contact hours, it could become pretty exhausting.

I'm going to look into this - thank you so much. X

The government doesn't tell us this but it expects that a student living away from home and not London will need 8.5k a year to live off (not comfortable but live)

If your fAmily income is over £25k then the amount of loan available is decreased. They expect you to make up the shortfall

Take a read of this blog by the money saving expert on the subject

I worked all through my final year of school and 4 years at Uni. When looking for a grad job when I finished uni, I think I would have struggled without any decent work experience to use for competencies etc. I suppose it depends on the degree, but if I was employing a graduate then I would definitely be more inclined to employ those with work experience than those without.

Edited to add - just read some more of the posts on this. I studied History too, I got a 2:1.

I (well the company I worked for and I ran the induction process for a month each year) recruit 450ish graduates a year and I can honestly say we didn't give a 'flying fig' if they had any work experience we wanted academic excellence and we didn't bother about anything else.

We wouldn't turn away someone with work experience but we certainly did not expect it or want it. If you have work experience you have learnt some transferable skills, and out first job would have therefore been to train them out of you so you learnt it our way.
