Meeting family halfway in California
We left the UK to move to New Zealand almost 10 years ago now. It’s a fair distance to go back for a holiday so we jumped at the chance to meet some family halfway in California at the end of the year. It all starts with our nephew who will be studying at Berkeley and who is our excuse for the trip. Thank you DRs Mum’s son! Very proud of you and looking forward to seeing you.
We’ll only be meeting up with our family for 6 days but are aiming to make the most of our time in California. It is our first time in LA but we visited San Francisco for a few days last year on route to Florida so have already visited some of the attractions there. Our little family consists of mum, dad (both 30 somethings) and our 12 year old daughter. December 15th – Arrive LA stay at Hilton Universal city (we purposely chose this for it’s proximity to Universal 16th – LA Tour (we figured this would be something easy to do on our first day when we are tired) 17th - Universal ( our daughter is very excited as she loves Harry Potter) 18th - Move to Indigo Hotel Anaheim, visit Downtown Disney and the Garden walk 19th – Disney Land (yay!) 20th – Pick up car, leave Anaheim for Pacific Coast Highway road trip, Santa Barbara for lunch then stay at Pismo Beach (The Cottage Inn by the Sea) 21st – Travel to Monterey for 2 nights – Stay at The Colton Inn 22nd – Monterey, 17 mile drive, Aquarium, maybe a bike ride We’ll be stopping lots on the drive between LA and the Bay area, too many times to mention and we haven’t yet decided exactly where yet. 23rd –Drive to Berkeley where we will stay until the 29th at the Holiday inn Express – which is walking distance to where our family are staying (there wasn’t much choice here at this time of year. We looked at it too late to get a decent airbnb or somewhere where we could all stay. We plan on going into San Francisco using the BART, maybe drive to the Napa valley but other than that we haven’t thought much about our time here other than seeing our family. 29th - Drive to an airbnb in the Santa Cruz mountains where we will stay for 5 nights. We wanted to relax a bit as the rest of the holiday is quite hectic. Plus, we wanted to stay near some old growth redwoods for walking and relaxing. We’ll visit the Henry Cowell redwoods here, go to Santa Cruz and visit some American relatives who live nearby. January 3rd – Fly home to NZ. Our flight isn’t until the evening . We’re not quite sure what we will do during the day yet. So excited and looking forward to what will be a very varied and interesting holiday. We would like to go to Yosemite one day but will do this on a future trip at a different time of year. We’d also love to visit San Diego but no time on this trip. We want to try and see sea otters, elephant seals, seals and perhaps a monarch butterfly grove (but we still need to convince our daughter on that one!). We aim on lots of walks along beaches, walking in woods and maybe even a bit of shopping thrown in, although at that time of year the shops will no doubt be packed. Thinking of maybe stopping off at the Gilroy outlets as we travel to Berkeley or as we travel to the Santa Cruz mountains. Any suggestions or must do’s would be appreciated 😊 |
