Thank you everyone - it turned out that my eldest decided that he’d go to school as he felt brighter once he’d got out of bed and had a shower (after I’d already rung the school to say he wouldn’t be in! Lol!)😂

So actually that solved my dilemma for me - my youngest is very rough, and whilst he is 12, he gets nervous being home alone, so I haven’t left him - my eldest would of been fine at this age, but my youngest is scared of the dark and noises etc (doesn’t help that my dog barks at the slightest thing and makes you think someone is there when they’re not!)

Thank you everyone for replying 👍

It's amazing what a shower and a couple of Nurofen can do!

FWIW, I wouldn't leave my 12yr old if he was poorly, but have left my 13yr old occasionally, but not for the whole day. And again, would never leave them if they felt sick. I had to pop to the dentist a couple of months ago, and 13yr old wasn't feeling great. Said he would stay at home on his own but I insisted he went to my mum's. I'm glad he did as he projectile vomited everywhere... he wouldn't have been able to cope with that on his own. I have been known to leave him with the decorator on occasion though, as although he's useless in a crisis, he ticked the 'almost responsible adult' box!

As long as they can make their own meals without burning the house down, I would think it's fine to leave them home alone.

I was home alone at 12/13 as I was very ill through my teens.

I stayed home alone but growing up my family dynamics were very very different to what my kids have.

Not a chance would I leave my type1 diabetic home alone poorly but regardless, I feel the same as you that it would feel ‘wrong’ to leave a poorly teen alone just because they’re older. However sometimes it’s just unavoidable for parents/carers but in our circumstances either myself or DH would be home.

From when I was 12 onwards if I was too ill to go to school I stayed home alone. My mum had to go to work and there was no other family living nearby.
