My son and I went on the mega bus last week from NY to washington DC. Left at 8am and arrived at 12.15. We left it too late to book the train as prices were astronomical. I think the earlier you book the reain the better prices you get.
The return journey was horrendous. The bus was due at 7pm but was late so we didn't leave till 7.45. Then there was a bad crash on the main road so we had to do a huge detour. The bus driver reached the limit on his driving hours so we had to get a replacement driver and the passengers sat in front of us were horrendous. It took us over 6 hrs instead of 4.15.

For the experience and economy yes take the megabus, but when I was younger and more adventurous I did similar in Australia ..all I can say is you can’t get off a bus or move carriages if you have “challenging “ passengers 😁

I'd rather get 1 way car hire!
If you want to see good videos though about getting across US on busses etc, watch Simon Wilsons trip with no money on Youtube- although he does bag a private jet for the very last bit.

For Amtrak, it’s worth checking out their website or YouTube for the NE Regional. It’s a personal thing but we enjoyed the whole experience, loads of room, clean toilets etc. At DC, Union Station is a must see.

I have indeed watched that series, thats what gave me the idea in the first place, it didn't seem so bad but I wasn't sure if i was missing something.

Im glad others seemed to have had a good experience on it though I guess if there is a crash or you get awkward passengers then that can ruin a journey for you

You can get awkward passengers on a flight, but it doesn’t stop any of us using that mode of transport.
We used megabus last year for a return journey from Toronto to Niagara Falls.
Both journeys on time, clean buses, great prices & we would definitely use them again.
It was a short trip where we didn’t want to hire a car & megabus suited our needs with various times to choose from throughout the day.
