It's all set in (Yellow) stone!

You can thank my hubby, Darrin, for that title. He blurted that one out yesterday whilst we were finalising hotel bookings for July next year. 12 months in advance you are thinking?

Believe me, if you want to secure accommodation in the Yellowstone Park Area you need to be booking 15 months in advance. We did and only got standard rooms! Everything else was gone. More of that later.

So, what is the intention of this trip? Having seen the programme on TV where they state that if all the volcanoes in this area blew at once there would be no West Coast of America - well, there would be but it would be a new coast some 800 miles further in than it is now.

Seriously though, it's one of the USA's great National Parks that we haven't visited yet and so it was next on the list. Reading one or two reports on here have also persuaded us that it's something we should see. We might be Disney nuts but I think it's good to have a break now and again. We love America and although we have done 28 of their 50 States we'd like to see some more. This trip will add Wyoming, Montana and Idaho to the list making it 31.

So, where to begin? The obvious route is in through Denver, the mile high city. Whilst we would have loved to spend a day in the city - and I particularly wanted to visit the Mint, we decided not to linger and the following day we will set off for Jackson Hole. We had originally intended to fly but at $400 for a 90 minute flight plus charges for each suitcase on top we decided we would rather drive the distance - some 500 miles (8 hours) and see the scenery. We have decided to split that over 3 days giving us a chance to visit Cheyenne and Laramie.
So it's an over-nighter in Denver and then on our way the following day. It's due north through Fort Collins and then detouring up the 24 to Cheyenne. Turning left takes us through Laramie and on to Elk Mountain for an overnight stay. The following day brings us to Rock Springs. The third day will find us in Jackson Hole. This is the southern gateway up to Yellowstone National Park and along the way we get to visit the Grand Tetons (pronounced Teetnz). We'll be spending 6 days in the Yellowstone area as there is a fair bit to see - not only Old Faithful but the Grand Prismatic lake and also Lake Yellowstone itself. There are Bison. They are not buffalos. Buffalos are found in Africa not USA. So Bufallo Bill got it wrong! Everywhere and on the road they are given preference. There are also Elk. I'm kind of hoping we see some bears - obviously from a safe distance. They are creatures I've never witnessed in the wild.

We had to book our accommodation here pretty early (15 months as I said at the opening) to be sure of getting in. Rooms aren't cheap here despite being National Park. They have such a short summer season. They are managed for NPS by Xanterra.

We will then leave the Yellowstone area to the West and for a few miles will actually be in the state of Montana heading back into Idaho for Idaho Falls for one night. We'll pass through Atomic City so called because of its nearness to the National Reactor Testing Laboratory! We will also pass by the Craters of the Moon National Park. Moving on will bring us to Baker City- once a main town during Gold Rush days. The hotel here, the Geiser Grand, is just stunningly beautiful- a true upmarket saloon and hotel.
We'll now be in Oregon and heading north west will bring us to the Columbia River Valley. On the Washington State side lives our dear friend, Lana, who we will visit with for a couple of days.
Then it's on to Portland for a nosy around before an overnight at Seaside. Yes, that's the name of the place.
Driving north will bring us into Seattle where we'll have a couple of days visiting more friends, Mark & Janine before finally flying home.
Most hotels are already booked.(Most have 24 hour cancellation should we need to jiggle things around). So right now, it's all coming together quite nicely.

We've just had a good laugh. Reading up on Atomic City (formerly called Midway). It was the first place to be lit by atomic power way back in 1955.
I said: Was that by wires or just the Big Bang?

We are still chortling about it now. Apparently it has a population of 26 with one shop and one bar. No gas station.

Another brilliant trip in the planning! We're doing part of that too on our trip next year - Seattle to San Francisco - staying in Portland, Seattle and Hood River which are on your route. Also booked Crater Lake Lodge through Xanterra. The full-up advance bookings already are horrendous!

Lovely that you get to meet your friends again too.

Sounds like a fab trip. How many miles do you reckon it will be and how long will it take.

I m quite jealous. Also I am in awe of anyone who can plan such a trip. Well done you.
