it really depends how upset you will be if the group are split, I never book seats I have never been split from my group, but if we are then we will survive for a few hours.

Until I check-in I assume we will be separated in the worst seats, then during the check-in process I have always been pleasantly surprised and happy with what we get.

Fortunately since the booking of seats became the norm my Son has been of an age where he can be on his own, and in fairness watches the TV for the whole journey and eats what he's given, much like at home !

We travelled a couple of years ago as 2 families on seperate bookings and we were all together. They were good. We are booked as a couple in December and we would normally book the 2 seats at the back so we have no one beside us but I’m not sure we will this time. Oh but then again...

I was told by a BA agent that seat charges were non refundable. So if you choose to cancel the booking and applied for a voucher that money would be lost. On the other hand, if BA cancelled the flights then of course you would get your money for seating back.
I’m flying into Miami in November so going to hold off as long as possible before paying and booking my seats.

At fifteen BA don’t regard you as a family group that must all four be seated together so there’s a chance you could end up with two and two so in your situation it’d depend if that would be a deal breaker or not .
We’ve never been separated but we travel term time . I’d just keep checking the seat map on BA.com and only consider paying if seats get very tight.

I would be delighted if BA were to separate my wife and I from our boys when we fly to SFO in August and home from Las Vegas in early Sept 2021.
They are 18 and 15. I have no doubt that they would be delighted also.

Needless to say, we have not booked seats.

This is a useful thread thank you! I booked for Jan 2022 and got a good price for flights but the the extra cost for seat allocation was really expensive considering the actual cost of the flights. As others said I'll check seat allocation every so often at the moment no seats are booked but then the flight is still ~11 months away!

It depends on the priorities for you. For me duo seats are important where possible so I budget for seat selection when I book to ensure I get exactly what I want and I'm willing to pay every time where necessary. If it's not as important for you then hold out for when they are free.

BA have always been good at keeping groups together so I would not but if it's really important to you then maybe just on the way out.
Log on as soon as OLCI opens and you'll probably be able to nab some goods seats for free.
Your kids are old enough to look after themselves and at the end of the day is getting off the plane ahead of a few others that big a deal? You'll pay a fortune to save a few minutes.
