Insurance

We are doing 10 days in WDW then moving to 7 day RCI cruise, all DIY. I’m guessing I need insurance with cruise cover even though more than half the holiday is land based.

Can anyone think of something specific I need to be wary of or looking out for when I insurance shop?

The only thing you should keep an eye on is making sure it includes "repatriation" from the ship itself. As long as you include Cruise cover this should be the case. Its getting off the ship if you are ill that will cost the most from what I've read and its what most people don't think about when they get normal insurance.

I got a decent quote from Staysure last week, but it’s for their annual policy and our cruise is over a year away (plus we can still get all our money back without insurance if needs be).

I just ticked that we needed cruise cover and filled in the countries we’d be visiting, so I’m not sure exactly what it covers yet - I’ll look more into it before deciding. It did say it includes covid cover, repatriation and unlimited medical emergency cover.

My main worry is that travel is currently banned and I’m guessing if it’s banned when I purchase insurance / holiday, and again when we’re due to travel, we might not be covered? Even if there was a period in between where it was allowed? Or if children simply aren’t allowed on cruises / foreign travel, then we might be stuck with a holiday we can’t go on.

So if travel is banned when you are due to travel then no insurance wouldn't be valid if you choose to travel. Now most of the COVID travel cover (assuming you are also adding this) does have an option for claiming back if travel is banned from what I've seen so this would be the valid route I think or a refund from the company if still possible.

Now if the cruiseline changes their terms i.e. suddenly announces no children then I would assume they would cover it rather than insurance as this is a change in the booking itself (like when an airline changes your flight you have the right to cancel if its a significant change and this would be).

In terms of insurance, I do annual insurance so have ended up paying for a year of non-travel in effect but I didn't want to risk not having insurance to cover all my holidays that were booked at the time. A cruise however is different as the basic t&c does often have a refund policy that's pretty good. I'd check the info on that as a starting point if this is your concern.
