I usually buy glass ornaments too, but I just put them in my suitcase (soft case)- never hd a breakage. This time I put my socks around it for extra padding!

anything fragile is always in the hand luggage, well padded with bubble wrap, came back last time with about 5 mugs at the bottom of my bag, plus xmas decorations (not saying how many as not to incriminate self)
remember that the TSA can search your case if it is selected, and sometimes they are not always careful and tip everything out and shove everything back
happened to a friend of my sister who had carefully packed the suitcase, it had been checked and it was like an explosion she had some delicate items that were all unwrapped and bashed up when they got home

We bring home fragile items every trip and always carry them in our hand luggage. I really wouldn’t risk putting them in our checked in bags.
